Amazon’s Cinderella Movie Trailer Makes Major Changes To Classic Story

The official trailer for Amazon's Cinderella reveals Camila Cabello's new princess and lots of changes to the classic tale. This updated take on Cinderella was first put into development in 2019 and slated for theatrical release in July of this year. However, amid the coronavirus pandemic disrupting traditional distribution plans, Sony shifted Cinderella to Amazon, where it will debut in exactly a month. It follows in the footsteps of movies like The Tomorrow War and Coming 2 America, both of whom made Amazon Prime their home in recent months.

Directed by Kay Cannon (Blockers), Cinderella stars pop singer Cabello in her first feature film role. The story is familiar to many: Orphaned Cinderella lives at the beck and call of her evil stepmother and stepsisters, though she dreams of a better future. When a fairy godmother gives Cinderella the chance to attend a royal ball, her fortune changes forever. The movie also stars Idina Menzel, Billy Porter, Minnie Driver, James Corden, and Pierce Brosnan, and, as the trailer has revealed, it will be very different from the fairytale everyone knows.

On Tuesday, Amazon unveiled the official trailer for Cinderella. The 3-minute clip features plenty of music and glamour, as well as Cabello's striking vocals. Virtually every major member of the cast gets at least a quick glimpse in the trailer, including Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert. Check it out below.

The first part of the Cinderella trailer progresses just how one would expect: Cindy has a difficult life, the stepmother is awful, and Porter's Fairy Godmother makes a fabulous introduction. However, it's once Cinderella meets her prince that things take a noticeable step in a new direction. Instead of agreeing to run away with Prince Robert immediately, Cinderella instead pushes for her own dreams, which involve becoming a successful dressmaker. It's a very modern, feminist approach to the classic fairytale, and one that should be interesting to see play out. There's also a major change in how the stepmother responds to Cinderella's relationship with the prince; at one point, Stepmother actually urges Cinderella to marry Robert for their family's gain.

With a story as well-known as Cinderella, adjustments have to be made in order to keep the story fresh. So far, Cannon's take has made multiple, which means there could be even more genuine surprises ahead. Disney's live-action Cinderella from 2015 made a handful of changes to the story, but nothing as drastic as the heroine advocating for her own dreams outside of marriage. In a way, this feels like a very bold change, and only time will tell how audiences respond to the updated, modern CinderellaIt all goes down on Amazon on September 3.
