Bachelorette: John Hersey Slams Greg Grippo Amidst Gaslighting Drama

Although Katie Thurston and Greg Grippo’s dramatic breakup on The Bachelorette has fans, and even other Bachelor Nation alum, divided, at least one of Katie’s suitors is sticking up for her on social media. John Hersey, arguably the best went-home-too-soon contestant of the season, spoke out on Instagram about how problematic Greg’s actions were and the importance of drawing attention to it. Some of Katie’s cast has already rallied around Greg, so it’s a bold move from John, but he’s absolutely right to be calling out toxic behavior.

From top to bottom, the last episode of The Bachelorette was a roller coaster (including a perplexing eulogy-like post-credit montage). Though Greg was initially elated to introduce Katie to his family, he turned on a dime after thinking that Katie didn’t give him enough reassurance about her feelings towards him. Greg confronted Katie with a tirade about her being fake and his disappointment that she wouldn’t renege on her contractual obligations as the Bachelorette to end her season early to be with him. Many viewers saw this as epic amounts of gaslighting, and the once-beloved frontrunner is now highly controversial.

While some of the cast, including Connor B., are defending Greg, John Hersey didn’t mince words when he spoke out about what he saw in the episode. "I wanted to address a topic that is being very heavily discussed right now,” John said in an Instagram story. “I watched [Monday] night's episode and was shocked by some of the behavior I witnessed, namely the words and body language exhibited by Greg." John commented that he was disturbed by the way some of his castmates have addressed the situation and backed up Greg. "Watching these actions get defended (and therefore normalized) strikes me as extremely unhealthy and a step in the wrong direction," John added.

It appears Greg formed some close friendships on the show, but John and others have pointed out that this situation is not black and white, and that Greg can be both a considerate friend and terrible boyfriend. "An individual can be a good friend to some while simultaneously being harmful to others in another relationship,” said John. “Friendship cannot be an excuse to blindly defend someone's behavior.” John is absolutely right that Greg can be both of those things, and his friends in the cast have a responsibility to address his problematic behavior and hold Greg accountable.

Fans of The Bachelorette have mixed feelings about Greg’s departure, but it seems John supports Katie and has no qualms calling Greg out. John points out that “absolutely none of us are perfect,” which makes it especially important to address toxic behavior as a way to raise awareness and ensure accountability. Many fans of The Bachelorette agree with John’s outlook on the Greg and Katie breakup, and it’s likely that Greg will receive significant backlash for his actions on the show.
