Brooklyn 99 Season 7 Recap: Biggest Questions Season 8 Must Answer

Brooklyn Nine-Nine wraps up with season 8, but before it officially ends, there are several unanswered questions from season 7 and earlier that need to be addressed. It hasn't been long since Fox canceled the cop-centric sitcom leading to NBC picking it up, but now, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is formally ending after the upcoming offering. The good thing is, the show-makers are able to craft a satisfying send-off to the beloved squad.

Premiering in 2013, Brooklyn Nine-Nine began with the arrival of Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) to the 99th Brooklyn precinct to become its newest captain. This didn't go smoothly at first since his subordinates were used to a more hands-off leader. But known for his knack for efficiency, Holt put a system forcing everyone to do their best jobs. Eventually, his efforts paid off as his detectives slowly fell in line. Beyond their professional relationship, the squad also developed personal bonds with each other. So much so, that they've almost become a quasi-family.

The sitcom is entering the final stretch of its storytelling with season 8. Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 7 ended with the birth of Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and Amy Santiago's (Melissa Fumero) child which, frankly, could've worked as a good series ending. But with another year on the way, the show still has extra time to address other unresolved issues for a stronger conclusion.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 5 introduced the idea that Holt has a chance to be the next NYPD Commissioner. The sitcom devoted a couple of episodes for his campaign to secure the position, with the rest of the 99th Precinct supportive of his endeavor. Gina (Chelsea Peretti), who is well-versed with internet culture, helped with his PR campaign. But, ultimately, he lost the job to John Kelly (Phil Reeves). This broke Holt's heart and spirit, and for a time. He even wanted to leave the task altogether because he was convinced there was no way he'll get another shot to land the job. Thanks to Jake and Amy, he eventually returned and carried on with his original job description.

Since then, however, Holt has gone through a roller-coaster ride when it came to his professional life. Most notably, he was demoted to be a beat cop at the end of season 6 by Madeline Wuntch (Kyra Sedgwick). Eventually, he regained his spot at the 99th Precinct, but Brooklyn Nine-Nine needs to revisit the idea of him potentially becoming the NYPD Commissioner. This would be a great way to round out Holt's personal arc in the show, and perhaps if the writers are generous, the sitcom can end with him finally getting that promotion.

Like Holt, Amy, too, has big aspirations for her career. In the last couple of years, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has developed her personal life more which primarily focused on her relationship with Jake. Since getting together, they have been on a steady path toward marriage and having a family. But with season 7 ending with Amy finally giving birth after having difficulties conceiving, the sitcom can put more time into her dreams of becoming the youngest police captain. Timeline-wise, it may be a bit tricky to see this plotline through considering that Amy is so far only a Lieutenant. This means that she needs to be promoted twice before becoming a Precinct Captain. That said, the show can at least hint whether or not there's a chance of her accomplishing this life goal before it wrapped up.

It's been a while since Gina Linetti reunited with her former co-workers. A part of the original Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast, Chelsea Peretti played the 99th Precinct's civilian administrator who is known for her weird antics and sarcastic remarks. The character ended her regular stint on series in season 6, episode 4 titled "Four Movements" which served as her send-off. In terms of story, Gina decided to leave the 99th Brooklyn Precinct after realizing that her talents would be better used elsewhere. With a growing number of online followers, she focused her energy on being a full-time internet talent. She returned as a guest star in season 6, episode 15 titled "Return of the King" where she asked for the help of her detective friends after getting threats on her life. Since then, she hasn't returned, but as Brooklyn Nine-Nine capped off its run, seeing her back isn't totally out of the realm of possibility.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine's core cast stuck around for the most part of its run. Every single main cast member introduced in the pilot has been either a series regular or a recurring presence in the show — except for Detective Daniels. Upon Holt's arrival at the 99th Precinct, Lt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) caught him up on his squad. He starts by introducing Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller), Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker), and Daniels who he calls "pretty much worthless, but they make good coffee." While Hitchcock and Scully continued to be a part of the Nine-Nine, their fellow middle-aged female comrade was never seen again in the sitcom. There's no specific explanation why Daniels was cut from the show, but series creator Dan Goor previously teased that they are planning to resolve the mystery of her disappearance. It hasn't happened; perhaps it's something that they're saving for the show's final year.

The annual 99th Brooklyn Precinct games, dubbed the Halloween Heist, will more than likely return for the final time in Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8. While trailers and sneak-peeks have yet to tease what to expect from this year's competition, it doesn't seem right that the sitcom wraps up without it. Throughout the show's run, the specifics of the game have become more elaborate, with participants becoming more creative with strategies just to win the coveted accolade. But more than the detail of the upcoming Halloween Heist, what's interesting to see is who will be this year's winner. So far, every single member of the Nine-Nine has won it at least once. There are still some debates as to who really won HalloVeen, but it could frankly just be a three-way tie among Jake, Holt, and Amy. Looking at the pattern, it's possible that Brooklyn Nine-Nine's last Halloween Heist winner either be Hitchcock and Scully or Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) since they're the only ones who have yet to do so.
