DC Reveals the One Time Superman Ignored Saving the Planet

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Superman: Son of Kal-El #1

In DC's new Superman: Son of Kal-El series, a flashback in the first issue reveals the one time the Man of Steel actually ignored his duty to save the planet. While Clark Kent has always been DC's biggest hero, always ready to save the day with his incredible powers, there was one special day where his friends and allies forced him to stick to the sidelines - the day of his son's birth.

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #1 from writer Tom Taylor and artist John Timms, Superman tried to stop an incoming threat of a massive alien invasion in DC Comics' past. In true Superman fashion, Clark Kent was ready to punch all of the incoming warships right back to wherever they came from. However, this never came to pass as his allies in the Justice League such as Martian Manhunter and John Stewart's Green Lantern literally wouldn't let him lend a hand. Instead, they claimed that they had everything under control and that it was only an attempted alien invasion. Instead, they instructed him to go to his Fortress of Solitude immediately.

Once Superman got to the Fortress, he found Batman waiting outside standing guard so that Clark and his wife wouldn't be disturbed while Wonder Woman was helping Lois inside. Superman's greatest allies in the DC Trinity reassured Clark, telling him to to not worry about the alien invasion. Superman taking a day off with Lois for the birth of their son Jon is a pretty big deal, as it's naturally a huge moment in their lives, huge enough to ignore an alien incursion. Of course, Superman's allies would want to make sure he was there to meet his son for the first time, the future Superman of the DC Universe.

Both Batman and Wonder Woman confirmed in this flashback that Jon's birth would have a huge impact on the DC Universe's future. Batman revealed that Jon had the potential to be more powerful than even the original Superman thanks to his unique physiology as half-human and half-Kryptonian. Wonder Woman added that Jon would have the "compassion of Superman" and the "fierce commitment of Lois Lane." Naturally, such a powerful and significant being is someone that the Justice League would want to keep protected, even if that meant fighting without the Man of Steel for one day.

Now, Jon Kent has proven himself to be a Superman in his own right in DC's present day. Not only that, but he'll also be wielding a strong desire for the truth just like his mother. It seems as though the significance of the first Man of Steel ignoring the planet for the sake of Jon's birth was not lost on him, and the new Superman seems determined to live up to the name he's taken on, as well as to make the parents who raised him proud as one of the DC Universe's greatest heroes going forward.
