Dinobot's Transformers: Beast Wars Defeat Recreates His Animated Death

Warning: spoilers ahead for Transformers: Beast Wars #6!

Dinobot just suffered a horrific beatdown in the Transformers: Beast Wars comics that will forever affect him as a character. Although the Maximals' new ally survives the encounter, the severity of the assault mirrors how Dinobo was murdered in the television series - albeit much later in the story.

Dinobot's utter defeat transpires during the comics' first major battle between the Maximals and the Predacons. The Predacons had just sustained two major blows following their crash-landing, with Nyx escaping Megatron's imprisonment, aided by the turncoat Dinobot, who subsequently defected from the Decepticons, enraging his former teammates and setting up their vicious revenge.

The Predacons soon find the Maximals' downed vessel and proceed to crush their enemies immediately. Rattrap, who stayed behind on the ship, is luckily able to activate the shields to protect his friends in Transformers: Beast Wars #6 by writer Erik Burnham and artist Josh Burcham. His comrades are able to retreat behind the shields without getting hurt because the shields are programmed to accept the Maximal source coding, but Dinobot is unable to get behind them because he still possesses Predacon coding, leaving him at the complete mercy of his former comrades. In typical Dinobot fashion, the former Predacon faces his enemies with honor but is quickly overpowered after Tarantulus stabs him through the chest from behind. A soon as Dinobot falls to his knees, he is immediately beaten mercilessly. The assault only ends when Optimus Primal threatens to take his assailants out with the Maximal vessel's dual-pulse plasma cannons.

Although he survives, Dinobot is seen walking with a cane later on and attempts to leave the Maximals due to no longer being able to wage war as he used to. Dinobot eventually concedes and stays with his new comrades with some coaxing from Optimus Primal, but it's clear that his combat prowess has been permanently downgraded by the damage he took at the hands, feet, and claws of the Predacons.

In the pivotal "Code of Hero" episode from the Beast Wars: Transformers TV show, Dinobot faces off against the entire Predacon army after forcing Tarantulas to bring him to Megatron. Upon their meeting, Dinobot learns that the Predacon leader is about to change the past by preventing the means that allowed the Autobots to win the Great War against the Decepticons, which put the Maximals in power over the Predacons. Like in the comics, Tarantulas blasts Dinobot in the back, but the defector is able to defeat his foes and even forces Megatron to flee. Though victorious, Dinobot is beyond repair and dies a hero.

Of course, the major difference between both instances is that Dinobot doesn't die in the comics, though the other similarities are impossible to ignore. This is just another example of how the Beast Wars comics are introducing major events and themes from the TV show earlier on than they originally appeared. The most prominent example is the introduction of the alien race known as the Vok or the Swarm in the second issue rather than later on in the TV show. That said, even though the comics have already recreated, to some degree, a pivotal moment from the television series, it doesn't mean that Dinobot won't die later on or won't try to take on all of the Predacons again on his own. Dinobot's injuries mean he'll never quite be the same again in Transformers: Beast Wars, but he's still a force to be reckoned with, especially now that he's been accepted by the Maximals and has their support.
