How Snake Eyes Sets Up The Original GI Joe For The Sequel

Paramount's Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins quickly and subtly set up how Joe Colton, the original G.I. Joe, can appear in the sequel. After previously trying to launch a G.I. Joe franchise, Henry Golding leads the latest attempt to bring the Hasbro action figures to blockbuster glory. Snake Eyes tells the origin of the fan-favorite warrior and his rivalry with Storm Shadow (Andrew Koji). While it makes plenty of changes to the stories fans are familiar with, it also is filled with connections to a larger world for a hopeful G.I. Joe Cinematic Universe.

Snake Eyes featured plenty of characters from this mythology on top of the titular hero and Storm Shadow. Hard Master and Blind Master both appear as part of the Arashikage clan, but they only have small roles in the grand scheme of the movie and possible future. The appearance of the Baroness (Úrsula Corberó) gives Snake Eyes a heavy tie to the G.I. Joe franchise's villainous Cobra organization. Meanwhile, a current member of the G.I. Joe team is featured with Scarlett (Samara Weaving) lending a helping hand to the Arashikage clan.

A potential Snake Eyes sequel would likely see Storm Shadow, Baroness, and Scarlett return, but the movie also set up how the original G.I. Joe can appear. The ending of Snake Eyes sees Scarlett visit the Arashikage clan's headquarters to offer Snake Eyes a spot on the team and information on his father's involvement with the Joes. This is also where Scarlett mentions that her commander is named Joe Colton, better known to G.I. Joe fans as the original G.I. Joe. Snake Eyes' ending implies that he is in command of the entire G.I. Joe operation and worked with Snake Eyes' father in the past. With Joe Colton presumably being the man behind Snake Eyes' recruitment to the Joes, that sets him up to make an appearance in Snake Eyes 2.

Now that Joe Colton has been name-dropped, it is difficult to imagine him not appearing at some point in a possible Snake Eyes sequel. The original G.I. Joe has been part of the mythology since he made his first appearance in 1964, but it wasn't until 1989 that he was named Joe Colton. The character saw plenty of action during his time in active duty but was later selected to create the elite special mission team known as the G.I. Joes. Even after he retired from this position, Joe Colton was routinely brought back to help the Joes in times of crisis.

Since he is still commanding the team in the Snake Eyes world at least a decade or two after he worked with Snake Eyes' father, it would seem that Joe Colton's role in Snake Eyes 2 could see him stay out of the action and mostly be responsible for leading Snake Eyes, Scarlett, and other Joes through their current mission. Paramount has yet to cast an actor to play the original G.I. Joe character, but Bruce Willis played him before in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. It won't be surprising to see the studio try and get another older former action star to take on the franchise's potential Nick Fury-like role if Joe Colton is added to the roster of a Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins sequel.
