James Gunn & Margot Robbie Bonded Over Guilty Pleasure Show Love Island

James Gunn and Margot Robbie bonded over reality show Love Island during the filming of The Suicide Squad. Robbie and Gunn teamed up for the latest entry in the DCEU, with the director bringing the character of Harley Quinn back to the big screen after Robbie's fan-favorite turns in 2016's Suicide Squad and last year's Birds of Prey. Robbie reprises her role of Harley in The Suicide Squad for the third time, sent on another gonzo mission by government official Amanda Waller. This time around, Task Force X heads to the island nation of Corto Maltese to destroy any evidence of a secret government experiment known as Project Starfish.

The Suicide Squad was released last week to critical acclaim in the middle of Love Island's seventh season. The UK based reality show has inspired a few other versions, including one out of Australia and one out of the US. As the original version, though, Love Island UK reigns supreme in the hearts and minds of fans. The series follows a group of single men and women who spend a few weeks in a decked out villa in the hopes of finding love and scoring a cash prize. Throughout the season and in the end, the public votes on their favorite islanders and their favorite couples, ultimately choosing who gets to walk away with the chunk of cash.

Robbie, who has made her obsession with Love Island widely known, found out that Gunn himself watched the show while they were both filming The Suicide Squad. Gunn posted a picture from the set on his Instagram of a gift Robbie had given him during production: a Love Island themed water bottle. Robbie can be seen in costume in the photo, with Gunn smiling beside her while holding up the water bottle. Check out the post below:

Robbie recently revealed on her Instagram that she had a Love Island themed birthday party and the actress' love for the show has been widely documented beyond that. Recently, Love Island UK contestant Hugo Hammond sent a Cameo to Robbie addressing her love for the show and giving the actress a shout out. Of course, in theory, Harley Quinn could never be a contestant on Love Island, but imagining that DC villain on a reality show like that lends itself to all sorts of hilarious possibilities.

The Suicide Squad even touched on Harley Quinn's love life briefly after she is captured during the early hours of Task Force X's mission and sent to the palace of Corto Maltese's newly instated dictator. Naturally, things don't go according to plan and Harley murders him once she realizes there may be a few red flags in the relationship. It's understandable, though, considering that The Suicide Squad character's love life has been extremely complicated and, despite the fact that Harley and Jared Leto's Joker are officially broken up, the relationship still weighs heavily on Harley's mind.
