KUWTK: Why The Kardashian Family Brags About Being Talentless

Critics may knock the stars of Keeping Up With The Kardashians for becoming rich with no real talent, but many members of the Kardashian family take pride in their so-called talentlessness since it has brought them success. Sure, the family members may not have talents such as singing, acting, sports, or other more typically recognized skills. But becoming some of the most popular and influential personalities in the world does not come easy.

From the beginning of their journey to being celebrities, the Kardashians have mainly faced the same critiques. Kim is perhaps the most frequent member of the family to be saddled with the perception of being talentless. She largely sparked the family's rise to fame when a sex tape of Kim and her former boyfriend Ray J was leaked in 2007. This led a lot of media attention, equal parts beneficial and hurtful, and to the eventual launch of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. After just a few years of increasing success, the Kardashians were slapped with labels of "no talent" or "famous for being famous." Now, even after 14 years on reality television and the launch of several lucrative businesses, Kim and other members of the family still deal with the same criticism. But they've learned to let their success do the talking.

The Kardashians have never been shy about how they perceive their fame. During a 2011 interview with Barbara Walters, Khloe and Kourtney didn't disagree with Walters when she said they didn't have any particular talent. Though they did assert that being able to entertain viewers is a talent, and a very important one at that. In addition to their ability to entertain, the Kardashians have fought back against being called talentless by showing their critical understanding of marketing. Kris Jenner's "momager" persona developed from a keen grasp of digital trends and talent management. The media landscape has changed a lot since 2007 and the family has adapted every step of the way. They were at the forefront of monetizing digital content as social media platforms grew, and have continued to engage that marketing savvy ever since. While it may not be outwardly visible, this tireless work is at the heart of their multi-billion dollar empire.

All their accomplishments have allowed the Kardashians to laugh off, and even brag about, being called talentless. When Kim was on the cover of the Forbes in 2016 after the gargantuan success of her mobile game Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, she shared the cover photo on Instagram with the cheeky hashtag #NotBadForAGirlWithNoTalent. Other members of the family have gone even further to play off of the critique. Scott Disick launched a clothing line entitled Talentless in 2018, directly mocking the umbrella term the family has been consistently thrown under. "So many 'talentless' people are some of the most successful entrepreneurs in the entertainment business today," Scott said to GQ about the decision behind the brand's name. It is all too fitting of the Kardashian ethos to spin what was once bad press into something profitable. And with over $2 billion in combined net worth, it's fairly clear that they are rather talented at it.

The Kardashians can definitely be a polarizing presence. Many people who aren't fans of Keeping Up With The Kardashians are quick to throw around criticisms of them having no talent or just being dumb celebrities. With a colossal entertainment empire to back them up, the family is more than happy to brag about the legacy they've built by "being talentless."
