Warning! Spoilers for Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow #5 by Marvel Comics
In the latest What If...? story from Marvel Comics, Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow, Spider-Man just barely avoided going down a dark path for good thanks to his love for Mary Jane Watson. In a new preview for the series' fifth issue, the sinister symbiote reveals to MJ that his love for her ultimately prevented it from bonding with Spider-Man and turning him into a full-blown monster.
Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow has told the story of what would happen if the web-slinger had kept his alien symbiote suit instead of getting rid of it. Instead of bonding with Eddie Brock and creating Venom, the symbiote suit influenced Spider-Man towards his darkest desires, making him murder some of his biggest villains, including the Kingpin, Shocker, and the Scorpion. Thankfully, Peter was able to separate himself from the suit. Still, the alien creature quickly bonded with Reed Richards and made even more symbiotes - which infected his fellow heroes and created a nightmare scenario for Spider-Man.
In a new preview for Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow #5 by Chip Zdarsky, Pasqual Ferry, Matt Hollingsworth, and Joe Sabino, Spider-Man deals with the infected Avengers in the Baxter Building as the Human Torch and Mary Jane Watson take on the symbiote Reed Richards.
The symbiote reveals to MJ that when he tried to bond with Peter permanently, she was on his mind and prevented him from doing so. It tells Watson that Peter's love for her "caused him to falter" and "never fully commit" to the symbiote. MJ is surprised with the revelation, as the pair haven't shared their love yet in this universe. She asks the monster, "Peter... loves me?" Reed responds by saying she was just an obstacle to his corruption. Human Torch quickly grabs MJ before the symbiote attacks and gets her out of the building.
Meanwhile, Peter prepares for the final showdown with the symbiote, as he pleads with Johnny Storm to keep MJ safe from the chaos outside.
Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow has been an enthralling, action-packed adventure that's made excellent use of taking place in a What If...? universe. Zdarsky, Ferry, and Hollingworth have told an engaging story with plenty of emotional punch. Making Spider-Man an out-of-control murderer and finishing the miniseries on a redemption arc is both shocking and bold. Now that Mary Jane Watson knows Peter Parker loves her, will Spider-Man make the ultimate sacrifice to save her and his friends? Readers will find out more when Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow #5 comes to comic book stores on Wednesday.
