Margot Robbie Doesn't Have Much Control Over Harley Quinn In The DCEU

Margot Robbie reveals she doesn't have much control over Harley Quinn's stories in the DCEU. Throughout all the ups and downs of the DCEU, Robbie's performance as psychiatrist-turned-antihero Harley Quinn has remained one of the highlights of the superhero franchise. She first made her debut in 2016's Suicide Squad, a much-maligned effort that was later revealed to be a victim of heavy studio influence. Harley was the best part of the movie, despite her questionable costumes and relationship with the Joker (Jared Leto).

Not long after Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. was quick to develop multiple movies involving Harley, like the on-hold Gotham City Sirens. Since then, Robbie has put in two additional DCEU appearances: Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad. Both movies have offered a revamped Harley that has been well-received by fans and Robbie herself. Robbie has spoken about parts of Harley's arc in the original Suicide Squad that she had some issues with, such as the Joker relationship. With the other DCEU movies, though, she's been more enthusiastic.

Fans might be surprised to learn that Robbie doesn't have much say in what happens to Harley in the DCEU. Speaking to CinemaBlend while promoting The Suicide Squad, Robbie answered the question of how much control she has over Harley's stories. She said:

"I don't really have that much authorship over where they take... Where different directors.... I mean, on Birds Of Prey I was a producer, so I had more of a say, but I felt very confident in James Gunn's hands that she was going to be handled with respect to the character and the fan base, because he understands that, you know? So I was as curious as anyone opening that script up to see like, 'Okay, what's his version of Harley and what's she like?'"

After embracing her freedom in Birds of Prey, Harley continues to be a brilliant agent of chaos in The Suicide Squad. Though she is once again paired with a group of villains, Harley is among the few characters who actually fall closer to the heroic end of the moral spectrum. Writer-director James Gunn has spoken openly about the new journey Harley takes in The Suicide Squad, and though she didn't have a hand in developing it, it's perhaps safe to say that Robbie is pleased with the direction her character has gone in. Gunn did his research and knew what was best for Harley, and that came through onscreen.

It's all but guaranteed that Robbie will play Harley again in the DCEU, but it remains to be seen just when and where. The DCEU still has several in-development projects to choose from, with Gotham City Sirens perhaps being the one that has the most interest from fans. Plus, The Suicide Squad could very well yield a sequel that could bring Harley back. Robbie said she's ready to return as her fan favorite character, so it's all a matter of what those in charge decide. Hopefully, it'll be for a story that is just as great as the previous two.
