Uncoupled, a new Netflix series from the creator of Emily in Paris, has cast Neil Patrick Harris in its lead role. Harris rose to fame at a young age playing the wunderkind doctor Doogie Howser, M.D. and later the caddish Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother. The multihyphenate has also hosted awards shows, produced documentaries like Wig and Revolution Rent, and starred in theatrical roles including a stint as the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway.
Deadline reports that Harris will star in the next project from TV bigwig Darren Star, creator of the seminal Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, and Sex and the City, as well as more recent romcoms Younger and Emily in Paris. Harris has also signed on as an executive producer along with Jeffery Richman, who executive produced Modern Family. The show comes from MTV Entertainment Studios and Jax Media and will start filming this fall. Despite Harris' prolific career, this will be the actor's first lead sitcom role since HIMYM.
Most of Star's biggest shows to date have centered on predominantly straight characters with LGBTQ characters playing supporting roles. Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place were teen dramas focused largely on the hormonal yearnings of young heterosexuals. SATC, Younger, and Emily in Paris follow metropolitan women juggling men while managing their careers. SATC's Stanford Blatch, Carrie's gay friend, had plenty of romantic entanglements of his own and is a beloved character by fans of the show. Younger's lead LGBTQ characters are even more fleshed out: Maggie Amato (Debbie Mazar) is a terminally cool New York artist inspired by Mazar herself, while the oddball Lauren Heller (Molly Bernard) is unlike anyone else on television.
A romcom about a separated gay man in his 40s is an exciting prospect from Star, and sitcom veteran NPH is a no-brainer for the lead role. Here's the synopsis for Uncoupled:
Uncoupled follows Michael, who thought his life was perfect until his husband blindsided him by walking out the door after 17 years. Overnight, Michael has to confront two nightmares—losing what he thought was his soulmate and suddenly finding himself a single gay man in his mid-40s in New York City.
