Robert Rodriguez Signs First Look Deal With HBO & HBO Max

Robert Rodriguez has signed a two-year first look deal with HBO and HBO Max. The director, writer, and producer is known for projects like Spy Kids, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, Planet Terror, and Machete. Last year, Rodriguez was pulled into the Star Wars universe to direct an episode of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian and is now both a director and producer for the show's upcoming spin-off, The Book of Boba Fett.

Rodriguez is the president and co-founder of Texas-based production company, Los Hooligans Productions, which he started in 1991. However, in 2000, the company was reincorporated under its current name: Troublemaker Studios. Troublemaker's home city of Austin is becoming more of a key location for productions, and the studio itself has proven to be a large contributor to the city's growing status as a filmmaking hub.

As reported by THR, under the new two-year deal with HBO and HBO Max, Rodriguez will be expected to bring projects to the WarnerMedia platforms for potential development as original series. His son, Racer Rodriguez, will serve as the lead development executive on any projects produced as part of the agreement, and there is a potential for them to come to fruition at Troublemaker Studios. In a statement on the deal, Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of original content, expressed the company's excitement at working with Rodriguez, praising his past work:

Robert Rodriguez and the team at Troublemaker Studios have created some of the most compelling projects in recent memory, pushing the boundaries of genre storytelling with humor and one-of-a-kind visuals.

Rodriguez himself is also keen on working with HBO, calling it "intriguing" to have the opportunity "to tap into the wealth of iconic IP available across the WarnerMedia portfolio and explore new stories to tell." His new projects, whatever they may be, will be joining the likes of HBO and HBO Max heavy hitters such as Game of Thrones, Succession, and the critically-acclaimed Mare of Easttown. Rodriguez praised those at HBO and HBO Max for their recent successes, saying  they've "proven they’re willing to take risks, challenge norms and tell inclusive stories while producing a wide breadth of quality content."

This is certainly a comfortable zone for Rodriguez, whose previous film work features characters with machine guns for legs (Planet Terror) and vampire-ridden bars (From Dusk till Dawn), along with many other surprising plotlines and premises. He's also more than proven his ability to succeed in the mainstream thanks to his work on Star Wars and The Book of Boba Fett, which will be an asset if he does choose to tackle WarnerMedia's "iconic IP." So far, no further information has been given as to what the new projects Rodriguez will take to the two platforms will be, but it is likely they will carry the dark, gritty Robert Rodriguez style the filmmaker has become so well-known for.
