The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 was recently put through a rigorous stress test and even though the foldable survived, it didn’t come out unscathed. While few devices will ever face such abuse in real-world usage, going to such extremes is helpful to demonstrate just how durable a device is, helping interested shoppers make an informed decision. Some commentary on the testing of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, along with how well it matches up with Samsung's claims, gives the video some added relevance.
Samsung introduced the Galaxy Fold in 2019 in an ambitious attempt at pushing this new technology to market before any other major manufacturer. Unfortunately, problems with the folding screen were discovered by early reviewers, and it was a somewhat embarrassing situation for Samsung. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 came in 2020 and seems to have solved the big issues with the hinge grinding and screen cracking, however, some owners have reported bubbles forming under the permanently attached screen protector. Also, the Z Fold 2 is not waterproof, limiting long-term durability.
A smartphone stress test so extreme that it might be best described as torturous was recently applied to Samsung’s newest foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This involved the use of a box cutter to scratch and probe various parts of the foldable phone, before moving to the more scientific scratch testing tools that measure hardness in the Mohs scale. JerryRigEverything put the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 through the rigorous challenge that the YouTube channel always uses when reviewing flagship phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 remarkably survived the test, still working after all of the abuse and even withstood an attempt to bend the hinge backward. Samsung described its new foldable as being 80 percent more durable than the previous generation and that shows in this demonstration. In fact, the device could not be bent out of shape when folded, despite the significant effort being applied with both hands. Samsung's latest foldable is water-resistant with an IP-X7 rating but the 'X' in place of a number means it isn't rated for dust. The stress test showed that it can also survive dust, and quite a large amount in fact.
Ultimately, the only weak spot found in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 by JerryRigEverything’s torture test was the main screen which is made of plastic and is quite easy to scratch, as one might expect. Plastic scratches with a Mohs pick rated at level 2 and that was the case with Samsung's new stretchable PET plastic screen protector, which is why the company recommends against using anything other than a finger or a compatible S Pen on the screen. A fingernail can also damage the display, so a bit of caution should be used since that could be a common accident. Keys, key rings, and coins might present a threat to the main screen as well. The good news is that most users will store their Galaxy Z Fold 3 phones in a closed position, protecting the inner screen.
The Gorilla Glass Victus that protects the cover screen and back of the phone scratches at Mohs level 6, just like any other glass, which is not a surprise. This is a very tough material, among the best on the market, and when closed the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is very strong. The finish on the aluminum frame was damaged by a steel razor blade and JerryRigEverything wields it mercilessly. In normal use, the frame might get some scratches and drops might mar the finish. When used with care, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 should be a long-lasting device and appears to be one of the best and strongest foldable phones available.
