Yet another game breaking glitch has been discovered in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, this time locking players out of seeing the ending under very specific circumstances. This glitch comes not long after another type of soft-lock glitch was recently discovered in the game.
This is the third type of soft-lock glitch that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has had in its lifespan. The first glitch was on the original Wii release of the game, which required downloading a separate application to patch out. The second glitch was discovered very recently, and it can block players from progressing through the Lanayru Mining Facility dungeon. Thankfully, update patches can be released for the HD rerelease to fix these glitches. unlike the original Wii game. But until patches get released, this specific yet frustrating glitch has left some players annoyed.
Reddit user hosnor101 (via Nintendo Life) described the glitch in detail. Players reported that if they defeated the final boss Demise while playing the game in Dutch, the game will end with a blank white screen instead of an ending and credits, thus locking them out of the ending. This can be worked around by changing the game’s language to English, but for those that wish to finish the game in Dutch, the glitch has proven to be a frustration with a white screen being players rewards upon beating Demise. One comment also claims that skipping the first cutscene after the final boss will prevent the glitch from happening.
Demise is the final boss of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and he would go on to set up the rest of the Zelda timeline through the curse that he inflicts on Link. This curse ensures that future incarnations of Link and Zelda would be destined to face against Ganondorf in an endless struggle for power. This makes it so that even with Link achieving peace in every Zelda installment, the struggle will never truly end, and there will always be a Ganondorf to oppose him.
Players who encounter this glitch don’t get to see the result of that peace, since the ending of Skyward Sword HD is blocked off to them. While this is a simple glitch to overcome, having the game crash just when players triumph in the final hours of the game can catch fans off guard. This coupled with the other recent soft-lock glitch makes the experience frustrating at times. Hopefully both of these glitches in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD can be patched in the near future.
