The Suicide Squad's Newest Villain Has DC's Worst Codename

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Suicide Squad: Get Joker! #1

One of the latest missions undertaken by the Suicide Squad introduces fans to a few all-new villains, including one with DC Comics’ worst codename. With Task Force X driven to the forefront of every DC fan’s attention by way of the recently released film The Suicide Squad, DC has seemingly decided to use that momentum to bring in some additional players on the Suicide Squad roster. Unfortunately for those new players, DC also decided to give one of them the worst codename ever, making it more believable that he would end up a villain.

In Suicide Squad: Get Joker! #1 by Brian Azzarello with art by Alex Maleev and Matt Holingsworth, Amanda Waller is once again putting together a team of villains for a top secret mission. This time, the Suicide Squad is tasked with taking down the Clown Prince of Crime himself, the Joker. To help in that mission, Waller recruits antihero and former Robin Jason Todd AKA Red Hood, along with Harley Quinn and a few other villains, two of whom are new to the DC Universe and one with a very regrettable codename.

The character in question is a newcomer whose real name isn’t given, simply going by the villainous moniker given to him upon his creation: Pebbles. Pebbles is the product of superhuman experimentation, injected with an undisclosed serum that makes him practically impervious with the added benefit of super strength. Much like Marvel’s Wolverine when he was subject to the Weapon X Program, Pebbles escaped his captors and murdered his creators. Pebbles’ murderous escape was assuredly prompted by the inhumane experimentation he endured, though the issue implies that Pebbles was mostly just upset with the name he was given, sparking his homicidal rage.

Another newcomer introduced in Suicide Squad: Get Joker! #1 is a villain by the name of Meow Meow. Aside from the “tight” codename, Meow Meow is also given a bit of established history within DC Comics lore. After the initial introductions, it’s revealed that Meow Meow has worked with the most famous member of the Suicide Squad before in the past. Harley Quinn tells Red Hood she isn’t familiar with members of their current team aside from Meow Meow, offering only minor insight into her character by saying she doesn’t talk much. Readers eventually learn that that’s the case because of the deadly tentacles she unleashes from her mouth. Added to her advertised power of being a necrotic — the ability to kill cells and rot tissue through touch — Meow Meow is certainly a deadly member of the squad, with the added perk of being vouched for by Harley Quinn.

Even though Pebbles is undoubtedly the most laughable codename a villain could have, the man behind the name is certainly no joke. Based on his brief time in Suicide Squad: Get Joker! #1, Pebbles proves himself to be a skilled and powerful fighter when caught in the crossfire. When faced against a room full of Joker’s goons, Pebbles holds his own along with the other members of his team. With Pebbles’ introduction being in the first issue of a new Suicide Squad series, only time will tell if the villain will continue to surpass the reputation his name implies, or just become a perfect fit for the worst codename DC Comics has to offer.
