What To Expect From Godfall's Fire & Darkness (& Lightbringer) Updates

As one of PlayStation 5's more unique launch titles, Godfall is finally getting its first major paid expansion with Fire and Darkness. Other than patches and bug fixes, Godfall has been relatively untouched for content beyond the Primal update, which added new endgame content and Primal gear. The Fire and Darkness expansion promises to add a significant amount of new content for players, from new loot to an entirely new realm for Orin and the other Valorian Knights to defend. It's also launching the same day as the next free update, Lightbringer.

Published by Gearbox Studios, Godfall is a third-person looter slasher telling the story of the Valorian Knights, an order of powerful warriors who don magic armor known as Valorplates. They conquered the realms in the name of unification, lead by two brothers: Orin and Macros. Macros, obsessed with power, betrays Orin in an attempt to reach godhood. Godfall received average review scores but hasn't seen much new content beyond the Primal update.

Rich in lore and world-building, Godfall takes place across three elemental realms: Earth, Air, and Water. Although not previously explorable, the fourth realm - Fire - was confirmed to exist and will become the major focus of the Fire and Darkness expansion. This is Godfall's first of at least two planned paid expansions and should add considerable size to the game. Traveling to the Fire realm for the first time, players can expect to encounter all-new fire-based enemies and bosses while discovering similarly thematic new loot. It's also been confirmed to include exclusive new cosmetics, which can only be found in the expansion. If the Fire realm is of comparable size, that is quite a significant addition; an extra third of what players already have.

Gearbox and Counterplay Games also announced the release of the next free Godfall update, Lightbringer, which will launch on August 10, 2021, the same day as Fire and Darkness. This update introduces its own series of new loot and cosmetics, as well as the Lightbringer challenge. This is an endgame encounter that, when completed, unlocks the new Cursed Loot. This loot will have specific requirements to complete, which will lift the curse and unlock the weapon's full power, although it has been hinted that unlocking its power does not mean the curse no longer lingers.

Alongside these updates, Godfall will also be launching on PlayStation 4, offering a free upgrade to the PS5 edition. Gearbox will also be testing matchmaking in beta between the PS4 and PS5, with talks of this potentially being compatible with PC players in the future for crossplay. Initially announced as a PlayStation 5 and PC title, introducing Godfall to the PS4 will give more players an opportunity to play, given how difficult it is to find a PS5 console.

The Lightbringer update is a substantial enough upgrade to bring players back to Godfall, no doubt releasing the same day as Fire and Darkness to tease players with what they could have if they paid a little extra. Fire and Darkness' exclusive content will extend the life of Godfall by adding another full realm to explore, more lore to follow, and plenty of new loot to uncover. As the first of at least two planned paid expansions to come, this could be the turning point to grab gamers' attention.
