What Yoda Would Sound Like If He Talked Like A Normal Person

Re-edited footage from the Star Wars prequel trilogy allows fans to hear what Yoda would sound like if he talked normally. The 1980 classic The Empire Strikes Back afforded fans their first glimpse of Yoda, the Jedi Master charged with training Luke Skywalker.

Needless to say the tiny but very powerful Yoda quickly became one of the most iconic characters not just in sci-fi but all movie history. Sadly, the ancient master of the Force would die in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. But that would not be the last fans saw of Yoda as George Lucas brought him back for his prequel trilogy beginning with 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Of course the prequel trilogy Yoda was a far cry from the original trilogy Yoda, as Lucas gave him a lightsaber this time around and allowed him to go into battle. In addition to arming Yoda with a laser-sword, Lucas also leaned hard into the character’s unusual backward-talking speech pattern, taking something that started as a fun character quirk and arguably making it annoying.

Now fans who were somewhat irritated by Yoda’s prequel trilogy Yodaspeak can hear what his dialog would have sounded like if he constructed his sentences in a normal way. YouTube creator Chewie’s Meme Town posted a video that re-edits the sound for Yoda’s scenes and puts his words in their proper order according to the standards of our galaxy. See the clip in the space below:

Chewie’s Meme Town interestingly sticks only to Yoda scenes from the prequel trilogy and doesn’t “fix” any of his scenes from the original movies or the sequel trilogy. Of course it’s not necessary to fix Baby Yoda’s dialog from The Mandalorian as he doesn’t speak outside of adorable little baby noises.

The fixed Yoda footage does have some fun novelty value, and may sound weird to those who've become accustomed to Yoda's speech pattern, but ultimately the adjustment doesn’t make all that much of a difference. Perhaps this is because the Yodaspeak gimmick was always silly and pointless, and only made Yoda sound wise in the most superficial way. Of course the entire character of Yoda arguably was overused in the prequel trilogy, taking away much of his mystique and reducing him to a cartoon character capable of performing physical feats that should have been far beyond his capability. At the end of the day, it can be strongly argued that Yoda was only used correctly in The Empire Strikes Back and should never have been brought back in Star Wars, even for his death scene in Return of the Jedi. But that Jedi is long out of the bottle and won’t be going back in any time soon.
