Why Spider-Man Needs Doctor Strange In No Way Home (Not Just Multiverse)

Spider-Man (Tom Holland) looking to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help in Spider-Man: No Way Home isn't just about the multiverse being in chaos. Marvel Studios' upcoming Sony collaboration is one of the most anticipated films of the year. While its proper marketing campaign has yet to begin, Spider-Man 3 tie-in merchandise heavily suggests that the future MCU Sorcerer Supreme will be involved in the story.

This makes sense considering that it has been previously confirmed that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will have narrative connections to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Despite the lack of official confirmation from Marvel Studios, Cumberbatch had been reported to appear in the threequel — something that hasn't been confirmed until the latest leaked set image reveals him greeting Peter Parker to Sanctum Sanctorum. Between this and the events of Loki that left the multiverse in disarray, it's getting increasingly clear that the Jon Watts-directed flick will indeed be a live-action take on the Spider-Verse narrative. However, this isn't really the only reason why the web-slinging hero is reaching out to the sorcerer.

Spider-Man: Far From Home set up an entirely different narrative from what Spider-Man: No Way Home is seemingly doing with a Spider-Verse of sorts. The 2019 blockbuster featured a game-changing mid-credits scene that not only revealed Spider-Man's real identity but also framed him for the death of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Before news that the upcoming movie will be integral in Marvel Studios' effort to establish its multiverse, there was an idea that Spider-Man 3 will be about the immediate fallout from the stinger. It might not be the case now, but the movie can't just simply sweep this lingering plotline under the rug; instead, it could be the primary reason why Peter reaches out to Doctor Strange for help in the first place. With Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) dying in Avengers: Endgame, the young hero needs to find someone else who can not only offer him protection but also guidance. He may not be too keen on involving Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) given his personal relationship with May (Marisa Tomei), and he could be skeptical of reaching out to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) considering Quentin Beck's illusion. So, that leaves him with Doctor Strange.

There are a couple of reasons why Doctor Strange is the most practical option to help Spider-Man at this point. For starters, he's logistically nearer as both heroes are based in New York. It's much easier to track down the sorcerer since the Sanctum Sanctorum is his command post and as seen in the latest Spider-Man: No Way Home set image, Doctor Strange welcomes the young hero into his home in Bleecker street. The Sanctum Sanctorum could also provide a safe hiding spot for Peter and his friends as seen in the official promo stills for the movie. Secondly, the pair already has a previous working relationship in Avengers: Infinity War; this is a good way to build on that. It's also worth noting that Peter played an integral part in saving Doctor Strange from Ebony Maw's abduction. Aside from hanging onto him as they're beamed up to the Q-Ship, it's also the web-slinger who came up with a plan to finally get rid of the Black Order member. Given this, Doctor Strange may be eager to return the favor.

Admittedly, not everyone is a fan of the idea that Spider-Man is getting a brand new mentor in the MCU after Iron Man's death. However, given his circumstances in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it's understandable that he would seek help from Doctor Strange in his time of need. Hopefully, however, their relationship isn't overdone, giving Peter enough room to figure out things on his own without being overshadowed by his team-up with the sorcerer.
