Adam Sandler Thanks Real Golf Champ For Happy Gilmore Anniversary Video

Adam Sandler thanks real-life golf champion for Happy Gilmore anniversary video. SNL gave Sandler his first platform for playing the goofy characters that would become his trademark. But his comedy acting career really took off with his first two feature films, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore.

It’s probably no surprise that critics were less-than-kind to those early films of Sandler’s given their sophomoric humor and dimwitted characters. But audiences took to Sandler’s brand of goofball comedy, as both movies became modest box office hits. Happy Gilmore in particular became enshrined in pop culture history, thanks in large part to its sports-related story, featuring Sandler as a hockey player who finds out he’s good at golf and sets out to conquer the pro tour while making money to save his grandmother’s home.

Sandler’s fans well-remember that Happy Gilmore ends with Happy winning the Tour Championship and saving his grandmother’s house (while vanquishing his mortal enemy Shooter McGavin). It just happens that the real Tour Championshp is going down this weekend – at the same time Happy Gilmore is celebrating its 25th anniversary. This convergence of events indeed inspired former real-life Tour Championship winner Rory McIlroy to make a video marking the anniversary, and Sandler quickly replied with a tweet thanking McIlroy for his kind shout out. Amazingly at the end of the video it’s shown that Happy Gilmore’s name is emblazoned on a door at Atlanta’s East Lake Gold Club (where the Tour Championship has been played every year since 2004) as if he actually competed and won there. Paying homage to a fictional character in this way might normally seem somewhat disrespectful, but so many golfers love Happy Gilmore that it’s unlikely anyone would object to seeing their name alongside that of Sandler’s character. Of course it could also be that the inscription was placed there temporarily for the sake of the video.

Sandler’s own love affair with not just golf but all sports is of course well-known. In addition to playing a golfer in Happy Gilmore, Sandler has also played a football star in The Longest Yard, a waterboy-turned-football-player in The Waterboy and a man with a terrible sports betting problem in Uncut Gems (which also featured real-life pro basketball player Kevin Garnett). It was also reported earlier this year that Sandler is developing two new sports movies for Netflix, one of which is the basketball drama Hustle. Given how popular Happy Gilmore remains among pro golfers and regular Sandler fans, perhaps the comedian should consider revisiting the movie's main character in another sports-related project. Gilmore may seem a little long-in-the-tooth to still be winning at golf, but of course, 51-year-old Phil Mickelson won a real-life major tournament earlier this year so perhaps it wouldn’t be so far-fetched to see Happy pick up his clubs and triumph again.
