The odds may actually be in Hulk’s favor in his fight with Scarlet Witch in Marvel’s What If…? episode 5. Long hailed as two of the most powerful heroes in both the comics and the movies, Hulk and a zombified Scarlet Witch were seen clashing toward the end of the show’s latest episode.
As a character who can single-handedly bring down Thanos, Scarlet Witch has a well-deserved reputation as the strongest hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As confirmed by the events of WandaVision, Scarlet Witch is much more than a product of a Hydra experiment with the Mind Stone; she secretly possesses Chaos Magic, which is arguable the greatest power in the entire multiverse. So given her potential for destruction, it didn’t come as a huge surprise when she stood revealed as the final challenge for the heroes to overcome in the Marvel Zombies episode of Marvel’s What If…?
To hold her off, Bruce Banner transformed into the Hulk and stormed into battle with her. While it may be presumed by some that this was Hulk making the ultimate sacrifice by fighting an enemy he has no chance of beating, that may not actually be the case. Only the beginning of the fight occurred onscreen, but what was shown had Hulk with the edge. Scarlet Witch was deflecting his blows with her Chaos Magic, but was still being driven back by the force of Hulk’s punches. What comes next may never be revealed, but’s highly plausible that Hulk can keep up his efforts and even defeat Wanda.
Because of her Chaos Magic, Scarlet Witch contains more raw power than any other Marvel hero, but the original Hulk is the strongest physically. The main reason he’s put below certain characters is due to the fact that he lacks the abilities of heroes like Captain Marvel and Thor, who bring a lot more to the table than just brute strength. That’s why Hulk may not win every fight, but the one that kicked off in Marvel’s What If…? could end with him as the victor. It’s important to note that the fight was happening at very close range – and that’s problematic for Wanda, who doesn’t have the physicality to go toe-to-toe with the Hulk. That explains why she was stumbling backward in their battle.
With a great deal of distance between them, Scarlet Witch might be able to incapacitate the Hulk before he could get close to her, but under the conditions set by Marvel’s What If…? episode 5, the Green Goliath has a clear advantage. All it could take is one solid hit, and the MCU’s strongest zombie could go down for good. If Hulk shows up in a continuation of the Marvel Zombies story in season 2, that may very well be what happened.
