Only Murders In The Building Cast Got Private Sting Concert On Set

[The following contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building]

Only Murders in the Building cast got a private Sting concert on set. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez star in Hulu’s comedic murder-mystery series about a trio of strangers investigating the death of a tenant in their posh New York apartment building and making their own true crime podcast about it.

With Martin and Short at the head of the cast it’s of course no surprise that Only Murders in the Building features plenty of comedic hijinks. But things got sillier than ever when in the show’s third episode, Short’s character Oliver began to suspect music superstar Sting - played by the actual Sting - of being the man who murdered Tim Komo, the victim at the center of the show’s mystery. In the newly released episode 4, the show's would-be investigators try to wring the truth out of unlikely prime suspect Sting by offering him a turkey and quickly find out he is not their man. Along the way, Sting sings a silly song called “Tim Komo” about the man he didn’t murder.

Only Murders in the Building showrunner John Hoffman has now revealed to The Wrap that the real Sting did more than just show up and sing his song about his fictional self's non-victim Tim Komo. He also treated the cast and crew to a private concert while other shots were being taken of Martin, Short and Gomez:

“And when we were doing takes of that, he would get up and each time he would — instead of playing the impromptu song, because we’d already gotten it — play one of his famous songs and it was different each time. So literally, we had like a Sting concert happening, unplugged, on our set. We were just in love with him. He was just brilliant.”

Indeed Sting is mostly known for being a legendary music star, first as a member of The Police and then as a solo artist. But the "Every Breath You Take" hitmaker has also tried his hand at acting on more than one occasion, most notably in David Lynch’s Dune where he played the very lovely Feyd-Rautha. In 1985 Sting took on a legitimate starring role as Baron Charles Frankenstein in The Bride but reviews were negative. Sting has also made multiple appearances as himself over the years, most memorably in the Simpsons episode "Radio Bart," which saw Bart Simpson getting stuck at the bottom of a well and Sting arriving to literally rescue him (while lending his hand to a stinging send-up of all-star charity music efforts like USA for Africa).

That Sting would appear as a somewhat unflattering version of himself in Only Murders in the Building proves he still has a sense of humor when it comes to sending up his own image. That he would treat the cast and crew to renditions of some of his famous songs on the spur of the moment proves that he definitely doesn’t mind putting on a show if the occasion calls for it. Maybe his performance for the Only Murders in the Building gang will actually lead to more musical collaborations down the road. Gomez is of course a pop star in her own right, and banjo player Martin is himself a recording artist. All they need is a drummer and they could put together a new and very weird four-piece version of The Police.
