A gaming collector on Twitter has caught, appraised and packaged a pack of limited-edition Pokémon x OREO cookies. Partnerships between The Pokémon Company and big-name businesses have come about frequently over the years, especially for easily marketable products like movies and cards. Pokémon itself represents a highly marketable franchise that has grown an enormous worldwide fanbase, Nintendo's largest outside of the Mario franchise.
Many fans have at some point encountered a box of Betty Crocker Pokémon fruit snacks at their local grocery stores or perhaps they have come across boxes of General Mills or Kellogg's Pokémon cereal. The Pokémon Company has long proven itself to be a savvy pusher of merchandise. Several of its past deals pertain to food, including partnerships with McDonald's. For the 25th anniversary of the series earlier this year, McDonald's Japan sold Pokémon toys and treats themed around Pikachu. The fast-food giant has also partnered with Pokémon on multiple occasions to deliver free cards in Happy Meals, including special holographic ones, though these events have become ripe for scalpers. Fans of the series sometimes take to posting their collections of cards, games and plushies online. But one collector has decided to preserve a different sort of memorabilia from the iconic creature-catching series.
Twitter user Video Games With Threatening Auras has posted a picture of a sealed Wata Games-certified Pokémon x OREO cookies. The packaging depicts most of the 16 collectible Pokémon that may feature on the wafers of the cookies. In addition to Gen 1 faces like Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, and Pikachu, newer Pokémon like Grookey and Pancham make an appearance on the packaging. The partnership between Pokémon and OREO was announced last week, and the cookies became available at retailers yesterday. What assortment of Pokémon this user has collected will likely never come to light, as unpacking the Wata case negates the cookies' appraisal value.
The Pokémon Company is a lucrative merchandiser, to the point of beating out names like Star Wars and Hello Kitty in total sales. In 2019, the franchise reached over $92 billion in all-time sales, becoming the highest-grossing media franchise in history. Considering the popularity of OREO cookies, Pokémon has likely found another easy merchandise home-run to enjoy. How much these OREO cookies end up appraising for in the years to come remains unknown. Perhaps this opportunity will turn out to be a larger success than either company anticipates, similar to the Pokémon Trading Card Game boom that overwhelmed appraisers earlier this year. High demand for Pokémon x OREO could push the snack away from its limited-edition status to stick around for longer.
Choosing to preserve a delicious bit of history in these Pokémon OREOs is an interesting idea, even if the Pokémon imprinted on those cookies will sit in the PC for the rest of their lives. Presumably becoming fossil Pokémon over time.
