The Wheel of Time trailer is indicating the show will include a major Logain moment that was missing from the books, which was the event where he lost the ability to use the One Power. Played by Money Heist’s Álvaro Morte, Logain is one of several Wheel of Time characters confirmed to appear in season 1 of the Amazon original series. In the beginning of Robert Jordan’s books, Logain was depicted as a “false Dragon”, or a man who wrongly claimed to be the Dragon Reborn.
As a man who possessed a great deal of command over the One Power, Logain was considered a great threat to the world, until he was captured and stripped of his abilities by the Aes Sedai. Official photos have revealed the show’s adaptation of the scene where Logain is taken by cage to the White Tower. In the books, it was then that Rand al’Thor first laid eyes on the once-powerful conqueror.
The glimpse provided of him in the Wheel of Time trailer suggests that the series will tell Logain’s story a little differently than the novels. The shot in the footage shows Logain hitting his captors with a wave of force while trapped behind his cage, which seems to be in a dungeon or cell of some kind. The Aes Sedai gathered around him and Logain trying to fight back with the One Power points toward this being the very moment where he is “gentled”. For a man, being gentled means they can’t tap into the True Source and use the One Power anymore. To put it simply, gentling is like what would happen if a Jedi in the Star Wars franchise lost the Force forever.
In the early Wheel of Time books, Logain was very much an unseen figure. His name came up often, but he hardly ever made an appearance. That’s largely due to Wheel of Time’s POV storytelling style, which limits readers’ knowledge of what’s going on to the experiences of only a small number of characters. Since Logain was only in the vicinity of Rand and the others a handful of times in the first few installments, much of the events that transpired with him were only discussed by others, and not explored directly. One such moment was when he was gentled. During The Eye of the World, it was said the Aes Sedai were taking him to the White Tower to have it done, and Moiraine stated it already happened in the second book, The Great Hunt. A depressed Logain, still reeling from the loss of the One Power was spotted by Wheel Of Time's Egwene and Elayne later on in the story.
It’s interesting that Wheel of Time is going in this direction with Logain. First of all, it provides evidence for the character being more important to the beginning of the series than he was in the books, which is something that showrunner Rafe Judkins has already talked about. Plus, actually showing it instead of just talking about it can leave viewers with a better impression of what it means to be gentled, and specifically how it impacted Logain. While it’s a process that’s deemed necessary because of the unstable nature of male channelers, it’s also an incredibly difficult and emotionally devastating experience for a person to go through. Considering that being gentled by the Aes Sedai is a tragic but defining moment for Logain, it makes sense for the series to dive straight into it.
