Focus Features released an eerie music video promoting Edgar Wright's upcoming thriller Last Night in Soho featuring the film's star, Anya Taylor-Joy, performing a cover of Petula Clark's "Downtown." Last Night in Soho is the first horror film from Wright, known for his work on action and comedy movies with 2017's Baby Driver and his infamous Cornetto Trilogy. The film follows Eloise Turner, played by Thomasin McKenzie, a fashion designer who seemingly gains the ability to transport to 1960's London in the body of young nightclub singer, Sandie, played by Taylor-Joy.
The video, released on Focus Features YouTube channel, displays Anya Taylor-Joy's range as a performer as she delivers an appropriately downbeat cover of Petula Clark's 1965 Soul hit "Downtown." The song is played over visuals of the actor as she performs in the recording booth while cutting to extended footage from the film's trailers and a brief look at a scene between Sandie and her abusive lover, Jack, played by Matt Smith.
While the video does not elaborate on any story details, it acts as a mood piece for the film, setting the 60's feel through the choice of song but implying dark undertones through the downtempo nature of Taylor Joy's singing. The footage from the film also appears to elaborate on the extent of Eloise's abilities as, mid-way through Sandie and Jack's argument, she seems to be able to take control of Sandie's body and stand up to Jack.
This video is an appropriately melancholic tease for Last Night in Soho, effectively giving audiences a sense of the tone and the story's central conflict while leaving just enough mystery to build anticipation.
