Mark Hamill has said that he will not be asking for a part in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Rumors have persisted that the Star Wars actor will return to space in the Marvel franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy ranks among Marvel's most popular properties and fans have been speculating what is in store for the long awaited sequel. Recently, Guardians trilogy director James Gunn confirmed that filming is close to starting on the third film ahead of its release on May 5, 2023.
Hamill is undoubtedly best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga, making the actor forever linked with movies set in outer space. This has led to some fans calling for the actor to be cast in the trilogy's closer. Anticipation for the upcoming film has become incredibly high, as it has been a long wait since the characters last had a solo outing. The fan favorite series stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana and Karen Gillan, with Midsommar actor Will Poulter joining the cast as Adam Warlock.
Mark Hamill has revealed to Comicbook.com that he isn't against being cast in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but he will not be personally asking director James Gunn for a part. Hamill has said that has been a fan of Gunn throughout his career, all the way back to the auteur's sci-fi/horror film Slither. Hamill also said that he and Gunn are neighbors and have spent time together, joking that he wanted to meet Gunn because he is out of work. But the actor feels that the Guardians series doesn't necessarily need him for it to be successful.
He came over with his girlfriend and spent the afternoon, we had a great time, but we never talked about me working for him or anything like that. He was just a friend. I'd never put him on the spot like that, so we'll see what happens. But he doesn't need me, his movies are really well cast and I just really enjoy watching them.
It should come as no surprise that the actor and director are friendly with each other. Gunn and Hamill have joked in the past about the pitfalls of making a holiday special out of a beloved space saga. Gunn is working on a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney+, which is said to be inspired by the legendarily disastrous Star Wars holiday special which aired in 1978. Hamill is understandably wary of this project's prospects given his own experience.
This news may come as a blow to fans who were hoping to see Star-Lord cross paths with Luke Skywalker. But with the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special expected to be released next year, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the horizon shortly after, there're plenty of reasons for fans of the series to be excited. The lovable team of losers will next be seen in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is being directed by Ragnarok helmer Taika Waititi. Love and Thunder's release was delayed by two months amidst the MCU's reshuffling of upcoming projects.
