As it ramps up towards release, Tom Holland has called Spider-Man: No Way Home "complicated" and the more information that's revealed ut they hint at a significant problem in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) struggles after the world learns that he's secretly Spider-Man, and the chaos affects the ones closest to him. Parker turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to reverse the situation in his time of need. However, Doctor Strange's massive memory wipe spell doesn't go according to plan. After Parker meddles with the magic, a hole opens in the Multiverse, and characters from past Spider-Man films arrive in the MCU.
The No Way Home marketing materials and trailers have already hinted at significant characters returning. For instance, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock appears in the trailer, giving Parker a menacing, "Hello, Peter." In addition, Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx's Electro, and Thomas Haden Church's Sandman are seemingly all set to show up in some capacity. Furthermore, rumors, supposed leaks, and Spider-Man Easter eggs hint that the previous Peter Parkers (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield) will also appear in the film. However, Garfield has vehemently denied any involvement in several interviews.
When it comes to No Way Home, Holland's quotes about the film are troubling. In an interview, Holland opened up about the film, saying it was like the franchise's end, however, crucially, he also added that prep work is pivotal for the film's actors "Because when you're dealing with magic spells and dimensions, it gets really complicated." Fundamentally, Tom Holland's Spider-Man: No Way Home quotes shine a light on arguably the most significant problem for fans and particularly those who have not committed to the decade-long lore of the MCU. Considering Marvel's Multiverse is coming into play, the story is about to get increasingly complex and confusing and it's not a great sign for audience members who just want to see a movie. The problem for Sony and Marvel is that Spider-Man: No Way Home could well be too complicated for its own good.
If Tom Holland is at all concerned about the story becoming complicated, casual fans have little hope. The MCU is weaving a complex tapestry of live-action films, limited series, and animated tie-ins; everything works together, with each new piece filling in blanks and creating new mysteries and questions. But at this point, things are just getting confusing. With numerous films and shows working together to create the MCU, the franchise has a very real chance of unwittingly leaving casual fans behind. After all, going to see a movie doesn't often require prep work on the part of the audience. So if the MCU's current Spider-Man, is worried about magic spells and dimensions making things complicated, casual fans are in danger of being neglected.
While the MCU has plenty of superfans, the films shouldn't ignore everyday moviegoers. Marvel has no shortage of fans who analyze trailers frame-by-frame, pointing out the tiniest details in the hope of figuring out Marvel's stories. For these fans, the more complicated the story and the more obscure the references, the better. However, a significant portion of the people interested in Spider-Man: No Way Home likely haven't memorized the MCU's entire catalog by heart. As long as Marvel doesn't forget its casual fans, the MCU will continue to prosper into the future. However, if the MCU's Spider-Man is even worried about being confused, that's a bigger problem for the movie than whatever Alfred Molina's Doc Ock has in store.
