MacGruber TV Show Trailer Sets Peacock December Release

The first MacGruber trailer arrives giving a look at the Peacock action-comedy series and revealing a December premiere date on the streaming platform. The MacGyver parody character first found life as a recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live with Will Forte portraying the titular character and having co-created him with SNL co-workers Jorma Taccone and John Solomon. The trio would later bring the character to life on the big screen with MacGruber in 2010, which saw a generally mixed reception from critics and audiences alike and only grossed $9.8 million against its $10 million budget, but has since become a cult classic.

Development on a MacGruber sequel wouldn't truly be explored until 2013 when Taccone, who directed the first film, revealed they were going to explore crowdfunding options to finance the film and would look to make it priority after The Last Man on Earth. It was officially announced a series was in the works for Peacock in early 2020, with the story picking up a decade after the events of the film as MacGruber has been in prison for over a decade, separated from his bride Vickie St. Elmo and released with the mission to take down the mysterious villain from his past, Brigadier Commander Enos Queeth. Forte is returning to lead MacGruber alongside the returns of Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe and franchise newcomers Sam Elliott as MacGruber's dad, Laurence Fishburne and Billy Zane.

Though MacGruber was not a hit upon release, the film has garnered a solid cult following in the decade since its release and is generally considered by many to be one of the better Saturday Night Live spin-off films behind the first Wayne's World and The Blues Brothers. The arrival of the first MacGruber trailer is sure to come as an exciting start for the week, giving viewers a glimpse at the R-rated hilarity they can expect from the streaming series that once again has Forte, Taccone and Solomon at the helm. The video also offers a funny method of clearing up where the character has been for the past decade and why he is starting off the series locked up in prison.

One of the more interesting elements of the story revealed in the MacGruber trailer is that Forte's titular character has been left behind by Kristen Wiig's Vickie St. Elmo. In the 2010 film, MacGruber had struggled with his potential feelings for Vickie due to his inability to move on from his dead wife, which ultimately culminated in his marriage to Vickie, where he would defeat his archnemesis Dieter Von Cunth in a grandiose fashion. It will be interesting to see how the two will reunite in the series when MacGruber premieres on Peacock on December 16.
