Simu Liu shows off his impressive Emperor Palpatine and Gollum impressions that were rejected by Saturday Night Live. Liu starred in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was released earlier this year and has since become one of the highest-grossing films of 2021. As the 25th film to take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi introduces Marvel’s Master of Kung-Fu, who is also the studios’ first Asian superhero. On top of that, the blockbuster features a predominately Asian and Asian-American cast including Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, Fala Chen, and Meng'er Zhang.
As the face of one of the year’s best MCU projects, Liu is now officially an A-Lister. Given how much the MCU permeates popular culture, several of its stars’ profiles increased in Hollywood almost immediately after their debut. That being said, Marvel actors including Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, and Don Cheadle have all hosted SNL. Last week, Liu joined the MCU SNL hosts club.
Liu hosted SNL, gave a commendable monologue, and appeared in several hilarious sketches including a notable Target spoof ad. However, as evident by a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, those sketches could’ve been even funnier. During his interview on the latter show, Liu talked about how he pitched very specific The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars impressions to those at SNL. Unfortunately, the powers that be rejected his Palpatine and Gollum. Check it out below:

To be frank, Liu’s Palpatine impression is solid but his Gollum gives Andy Serkis a run for his money. They say that imitation is the sincerest of flattery and it comes as no surprise that Liu would have an affinity for characters within the fantasy genre. The actor is a self-proclaimed movie lover and MCU fanatic. Liu famously tweeted about his desire to play Shang-Chi long before Marvel Studios cast the role. Reflecting on the now-viral tweet, Liu once said, he only "dreamt of myself as a superhero in my wildest dreams."
Suffice to say, Liu has imagined himself wielding a lightsaber and destroying the One Ring in his dreams as well. While the actor didn’t get to embrace his Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings ambitions on SNL, thankfully he did on The Tonight Show for the internet to enjoy. On the Marvel side of things, Shang-Chi’s mid-credits scene set Liu up for a promising future in the MCU but it's still unclear when he will return.
