On The Challenge, Camila Nakagawa made racially charged comments about Leroy Garrett, and MTV apologized to him on November 17, but the network may have waited too long to do so. Recently, The Challenge alum recounted the rule-breaking incident in an Instagram video, saying that it had been weighing on his mind even though it happened over five years ago. As Leroy watched the episode on his laptop, he choked up, saying that producers and security should have stepped in. He strongly believes that MTV dropped the ball.
The incident happened when an intoxicated Camila thought Leroy was going to send her into an elimination and hurled terrible insults at him. Leroy, who had a friendship with Camila at the time on The Challenge: Dirty 30, tried to calm her down. However, she became more incensed and screamed offensive profanity at him. Camila then violently threw a pillow at Leroy. He recounted that he is disappointed with MTV for merely sending her to a hotel for the night, rather than kicking her off the show.
Leroy confessed that at the time, he felt bad for the controversial cast member, knowing that she would heavily regret her actions the next day. He was also afraid to stand up for himself, admitting that his primary focus was on staying on the show to make money. Although he was disappointed with himself for being too passive, he told his fans that he has now forgiven himself. However, Leroy hasn’t forgiven the network's higher-ups. MTV producers led him to believe that they cared about him, as they would tell him they loved him and wanted him back for every season. Allowing Camila to stay showed him how insincere their words were. See Leroy's IG post below:
Leroy’s disappointment with how MTV handled the situation led him to eventually leave the show for good. MTV’s apology seems lackluster given the pain Leroy has felt over the situation. MTV allowed her to stay on the show, and she went on to win that season, which was a bitter pill for Leroy to swallow. Not only did she not get punished, but she got rewarded for her bad behavior. She then went on to do The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars, where she again drank too much and went on a rampage. She physically attacked a production member, which finally got her kicked off the show.
There has been an outpouring of support from Leroy’s friends and fans. At the time of the incident, Jemmye Carroll, along with many cast members, showed disgust over the cocky player’s actions, Jemmye responded to the Instagram post shown above with, “Forever an ally…I love you so much.” He thanked all of his friends that stood up for him but questioned why the powers-that-be at MTV didn’t. To add insult to injury, a fan pointed out that MTV follows Camila on Instagram, but not Leroy. This further cements his desire to break ties with The Challenge for good.
The Challenge airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on MTV.
