CCP's EVE FPS Project Nova Canceled, Shooter Ideas Still Being Explored

CCP Games has announced the EVE shooter Project Nova has officially been canceled, but the company is still looking into make an EVE game with shooting mechanics. This news comes after Project Nova was suspended back in 2018 as the company decided to rework the game.

Project Nova's hype began when it was unveiled at EVE Fanfest 2016 as Project Legion, but little information was known about it at that time. One year later, the CCP Games CEO, Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, addressed the crowd at EVE Fanfest 2017 and assured everyone that the game was still coming, but it had been renamed Project Nova. The idea of the distinction, and of the project in general, was to separate the game from the majority of EVE products by being a boots-on-the-ground shooter, compared to the starship-based gameplay of the franchises' core title. There have been several updates on Project Nova over time, and the invite-only Project Nova alpha was announced for November of 2018. This stage never happened, as the game went back to the drawing board.

Massively OP reports that CCP Games has officially canceled the greatly-anticipated EVE shooter game. The original reason that the Project Nova had to be reworked was because it did not meet the company's expectations, and it did not fit into the EVE universe the way it should have. Despite promises from Pétursson that the company would continue working with the title, the game's director Snorri Árnason has since stated that the title is fully canceled.

The good news here is that even though Project Nova has been canceled, similar work is currently been done in CCP's London studios. According to Árnason, the project will be given a new name, but a lot of the mechanics and ideas behind Project Nova are being picked up by the London team. Árnason is upset that he and his team will no longer be working on the project, but is optimistic with what the other studio is working on. It should be noted that CCP London has been hiring team members for the last year, and has stated that it is working on an action MMORPG.

This news will be hard to hear for a lot of EVE Online fans who have been waiting on Project Nova for years. With the amount of delays the game has experienced, though, it shouldn't surprise anyone to hear the project experienced at least some troubles during the development process. Luckily, the EVE shooter Project Nova is at least living on in concept, even if the original team is no longer attached to it. Hopefully, CCP Games will have something to show for all their effort soon.
