Marvel's Own Justice League is Going To Save America

When planet Earth is struck by an alien invasion this summer, it's going to take more than the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, or even the X-Men to survive. It's going to take a completely different brand of superhero, in fact. Thank goodness Marvel just rebooted the closest thing they've got to DC's Justice League.

It's been some time since Agent Phil Coulson's new Squadron Supreme of America was revealed in Avengers #700, promising a new type of patriotic super-team concerned only with the United States (Canada, you're on your own). Now, this Justice League analogue in the nation's capital -- officially dubbed "D.C.'s greatest heroes!" -- is confirmed to be taking part in Marvel's next major event, in a tie-in miniseries of their own: Empyre: Squadron Supreme. But while they may look the part as versions of DC's noblest heroes... the Kree and Skrull soldiers coming to Earth have no idea of the bloodshed they're in for.

First created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, the Squadron Supreme was introduced as a knowing play on the Justice League, acting as adversaries to Marvel's heroes (knowing full well that every reader, and DC themselves would be in on the joke). Superman became Hyperion, Batman the Nighthawk, Wonder Woman now a Power Princess, with riffs on The Flash and Green Lantern later added into the mix. But the latest team reintroduced by Jason Aaron and Ed McGuinness were eventually shown to be the creation of Coulson, not recruited heroes. And programmed to be mindless, devoted, and murderous, to boot.

The team showed they were deadlier than the Justice League ever could be during the War of the Realms, annihilating all invaders on American soil. And now that Marvel's solicitations for May 2020 have arrived, fans have another defense of the homefront to look forward to. Take a look at the official cover art for Empyre: Squadron Supreme #1 below.

The big question now becomes: will the Squadron stand a chance of becoming true heroes when facing off against a planetary enemy, and bucking the control of Colson? Whether they do or not, this Empyre tie-in from Waid and Neves is one readers won't want to miss when it arrives in May. Until then, read on below for the full solicitation details and plot synopsis:

  • EMPYRE: SQUADRON SUPREME #1 (OF 2)
  • MARK WAID (W)
  • DIO NEVES (A)
  • COVER BY PACO MEDINA
  • The invasion has begun! But the alien invaders soon encounter resistance in the form of the Squadron Supreme of America! As the two forces clash, only one thing is clear…the fight for America’s survival has begun!

Empyre: Sqaudron Supreme #1 will arrive in your local comic book shop in May.
