The Batman: Batsuit Revealed by Matt Reeves

Director Matt Reeves has given us our first look at the new DCEU Batman movie costume with Robert Pattinson wearing the cape and cowl!

We finally know what Robert Pattinson will look like in the cape and cowl, thanks to a short camera test video posted on Twitter by The Batman director Matt Reeves. It's only a glimpse at Pattinson's Batsuit -- and an incredibly dark one at that -- but it's our best look yet at this new era of Batman movies.

Until now, WB has kept the new Batsuit under wraps. But now that the veil has been lifted somewhat, it's clear that...not too much has changed in terms of the look of the suit, which resembles the one worn by Ben Affleck in the Batman's earlier DCEU appearances. The Pattinson suit retains the armored quality of past costumes, complete with a metallic Bat symbol. But it also seems to adopt a more modular approach similar to the reflexive Bat armor worn by the Dark Knight in the Arkham Knight game.

Sorry, those hoping to finally see the Bat tights on screen again won't get that here. You also aren't going to get any color -- not even a yellow background for the symbol.

Perhaps the biggest differences are the shapes of the symbol and the cowl. While Affleck's suit used Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns Bat symbol, Pattinson sports something a bit slimmer and more modern, not unlike the symbol used in the current DC Comics. The cowl also looks like it's lifted from the comics, but from Batman's earlier Golden Age appearance, with a more prominent, helmet-like mask covering Pattinson's face. (And it looks like he certainly has the chin for this cowl!) The video stops short of revealing the length of the Bat ears -- the Golden Age cowl initially sported long ears, but later designs have toned down the length over the years.

The DCEU has largely preferred the Bat armor look over the leather of the Christopher Nolan and '90s movies, and it looks like that tradition will continue here. Let's just hope that Pattinson is able to turn his head in this suit. Check out the new DCEU Batsuit for yourself below:

The movie is set in the early days of the Dark Knight's crime-fighting crusade, but don't expect Dr. Death, the Mad Monk, or Hugo Strange to be the major villains of this piece. The movie will feature some of Batman's most popular rogues. The Batman also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, John Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone, and Peter Sarsgaard is rumored to play Two-Face. Rounding out the good guys are Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.

While an ensemble cast like this is a recipe for a big, explosive movie -- and it likely will be -- Reeves has also teased that the film will be a personal story about the Bat himself.

"It's very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale," Reeves told THR in 2019. "It's told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it's going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional."

If all goes well, this movie is said to be the start of a new trilogy starring Pattinson's Caped Crusader.

The Batman opens in theaters on June 25, 2021.
