The Office: 10 Times Michael Scott Was Actually A Good Boyfriend

Michael Scott is a character who is known for being rather inappropriate, rude, and eccentric. As the main character on The Office, many fans have complex feelings about him as he can be endearing at times but also rather rude and over the top at others. When it comes to romance, Michael had a variety of partners over the nine seasons of the show.

Given that Michael is so socially awkward and clueless, he had many moments where he was an awful boyfriend. So, it’s even more surprising that he also had some times where he was a great boyfriend. Here are ten of those times.

10 Inviting Carol to Dunder Mifflin events

After Michael’s casual fling with Jan doesn’t turn into dating, Michael starts dating his real estate agent Carol Stills. They date for a while and Michel is, unsurprisingly, not always a great boyfriend. He can be way too intense and move too quickly in ways that are inappropriate.

However, one way that he is a good boyfriend to Carol is that he invites her to lots of events. He clearly wants to be around her and spend time with her even if he is obtuse.

9 Listening to Holly about Packer being a jerk

One of the most annoying characters on The Office is Todd Packer. He's a horrible person who makes fun of everyone and is basically a walking sexual assault lawsuit waiting to happen. The fact that Michael likes him so much is frustrating.

However, when Holly tells him that Packer is a jerk, he actually takes her seriously. This shows that he actually values her opinion and listens to her.

8 When he let Jan live with him

Jan and Michael’s relationship is like a terrifying roller coaster from start to finish. While Micahel starts out seeming like the bad guy, Jan continues to devolve and actually is the one who is controlling, manipulative, and abusive.

Michael does a lot of things to help Jan out and try to be a good boyfriend to her. One nice thing he does is let Jan move in with him after she loses her job. He basically pays for everything for her and lets her spend all of his money, and he even starts a second job to support her bad spending habits.

7 He supported Holly in her dorkiness

While Michael has many romantic relationships, the only one that really is right for him is the relationship with Holly. These two seem to really understand each other and have a good time dating.

Michael is interested in Holly’s life and enjoys spending time around her and joking with her. In this way, they are both equally invested in one another, and it’s great to see Michael be a committed, caring partner like this.

6 Trying to defend Jan at the deposition

As Jan continues to be a horrible girlfriend to Michael, he still tries to be a good boyfriend to her. When she sues Dunder Mifflin, Michael agrees to take her side and testify for her during the deposition.

This clearly puts him in a very awkward and uncomfortable position that isn’t fair to him. However, the fact that he does try to support Jan even though she betrays him, in the end, is rather admirable.

5 Supporting Jan’s candle-making business

This is another instance of Michael being a good boyfriend to Jan even while she was not treating him well. Michael might be a jerk at times and doesn’t always treat people well, but he did try to have a good relationship with Jan.

He clearly cared about her more than she ever cared about him. He even went so far as to let her use their entire spare room for her candle-making business and to try and get his friends to invest in it.

4 When he made a homemade gift for Helene’s birthday

This moment is kind of ruined by the fact that Michael later tries to break up with Helene on her birthday, but, before that, his efforts to make her a homemade present are rather endearing. He makes basically a scrapbook full of moments from their relationship, love poems, and more.

This is definitely sweet even if it’s a bit childish of him. However, he does ruin it by breaking up with her when he learns how old she really is.

3 When he broke up with Donna

This might seem counterintuitive to someone being a good boyfriend, but this is actually the best thing Michael could have done for her. Donna was already married and started dating Michael without even telling him this.

The fact that Michael broke up with her once he found out was the right thing to do, and it was doing both of them a favor. By breaking up with her, Michael showed that he cared about her as well as about his own morals.

2 The way that he proposed to Holly

One of the most romantic moments from The Office was when Michael proposed to Holly. While he started out with some bad ideas, with the help of people like Pam, Michael came up with the perfect proposal.

The candles and the fact that the proposal was done in the office where they met was both romantic and unique to their relationship. It’s clear that Micahel loved Holly a lot and couldn’t wait to marry her.

1 Moving to Colorado with Holly

When Holly learns that her parents are struggling with their health in their old age, she realizes that she has to move home to Colorado. The fact that Michael is willing to go with her says a lot about how much he loves her.

Dunder Mifflin and his job have always been the most important things in his life, but now he knows that Holly is. This is a big moment for Michael and a moment where he’s a great boyfriend.
