Prince William and Kate Middleton were upset with celebrities making jokes about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's exit from the royal family and Prince Andrew while at the BAFTA. The royal couple tried to remain calm but were not enjoying the jokes at their family's expense.
The royals are currently going through an interim phase, following some not-so-private personal matters surfacing in the public eye thanks to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as well as the scandal surrounding Prince Andrew and his link to Jeffrey Epstein who was an accused pedophile. In November 2019 Prince Andrew stepped back from his royal duties. While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they too would be stepping back from their senior roles and moving to North America. Hollywood did not hold back when it came to throwing punches during the BAFTAs at the royal couple. At the beginning of the award show, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walked the red carpet for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts dressed to the nines. The award show took place at the Royal Albert Hall which was a famous landmark. The year was Prince William’s 10th anniversary of being the BAFTA’s president and in his opening speech spoke about the need for diversity within the movie business.
The royals were seated in the front row and seemed to be noticeably uncomfortable when Brad Pitt and Rebel Wilson made fun of both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's exit from the royal family and the controversy surrounding Prince Andrew. According to Fox News, UK commentator Neil Sean told the outlet that the royal couple felt that many A-list stars stepped out of line when it came to their jokes. According to the reporter, that star who stepped out of line the most was Wilson who pretended to be confused when speaking about Prince Andrew and his sex scandal. She walked out onto the front stage saying, “It is really great to be here at the Royal Andrew… uh, Royal Harry, no, at this royal palace place,” which did not earn laughs from Prince William or Kate. Cameras panned to the couple who sat in their seats with stern faces.
Though the royal couple made it clear that they didn't enjoy that joke when Brad Pitt joked about naming his BAFTA award "Harry" because he's so excited to bring it back to America with him it looked like they laughed and cheered. However, the insider claimed, "This was not met with the smiling faces that you saw on the final edited version of the show." Sean alleged that the version was edited so that there were minimal reaction shots from the royal couple.
Though it was an amazing night for most involved, it seems that Prince William and Kate Middleton didn't enjoy it as much as the a-listers. Even though there was a bit of turmoil during their ceremony the big take away should be that Hollywood needs to address the lack of diversity and become more inclusive.
