There are not many names in American comedy that are as recognizable as Amy Poehler. Since making her name on Saturday Night Live, Poehler has appeared in plenty of TV shows and movies.
And she has gained a lot of fans during that time due to her excellent comedic timing, which is showcased in both her live-action and voice acting performances. Many reviewers clearly agree because much of her work has received critical acclaim. We have used the users on IMDb to determine what are the five greatest movies and five best television shows Poehler has been apart of and included them in this list.
10 Movie: Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny - 6.8
In this film, Jack Black and Kyle Gass play fictionalized versions of themselves as they attempt to steal a powerful guitar pick from the Rock and Roll history museum. Poehler made an appearance in the movie as an unenthusiastic truck stop waitress.
The usually energetic actress had to give a more low-key performance to fit the character. Although, she was still funny due to the several sarcastic and witty comments she made.
9 TV Show: Broad City - 8.4
Amy Poehler was the executive producer of this comedy about two women and their hilarious lives in New York City. And in the season one finale, Poehler guest-starred as a frustrated chef working at the restaurant where Abbi and Ilana were eating.
Throughout the episode, she was constantly arguing with her boyfriend (the waiter), and it was hysterical. A lot of the episode's best lines were delivered by the actress.
8 Movie: Horton Hears A Who - 6.8
This Dr. Suess adaptation follows an elephant named Horton, who finds and tries to protect a miniature civilization. In that civilization lived a woman named Sally O' Malley, who was voiced by Amy Poehler.
Sally was the wife of the Mayor of Whoville and the mother to their many kids. She did not have a huge role in the movie, but Poehler still managed to bring plenty of humor to the character.
7 TV Show: Louie - 8.5
This sitcom depicts a fictionalized version of Louis C.K going about his life. Amy Poehler made one appearance in the series as Louie's sister, Debbie. In the episode, she called Louie during Christmas and invited him to Mexico for New Year's.
Poehler might be known for her comedy, but she gave an excellent serious performance here as a sister who is worried about her brother spending the holidays alone.
6 Movie: Mean Girls - 7.0
In this cult classic, new girl Cady Heron quickly becomes a part of the popular girl clique known as the Plastics, although it all starts to fall apart when she becomes interested in the leader of the group's ex-boyfriend.
One of the most memorable roles of Amy Poehler's career was as Mrs. George in this film. She was the "cool mom" to the Queen Bee of high school, Regina George. It was hilarious to see her try to fit in with the high school kids.
5 TV Show: Parks And Recreation - 8.6
Amy Poehler starred in this mockumentary sitcom revolving around a group of people working in the Parks Department of the fictional city of Pawnee, Indiana. She played Leslie Knope, who was an extremely enthusiastic member of the department. Her unwavering, upbeat attitude led to plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.
The sitcom's ensemble cast was incredible throughout all seven seasons. And much like Leslie Knope was the heart of the Parks and Recreation Department, Poehler was the heart of the show.
4 Movie: The Secret World Of Arrietty - 7.6
This beautiful anime movie is based on the children's novel entitled The Borrowers. It tells the tale of the miniature Clock family who all secretly live inside a human home and borrow small items to get by.
In the American dub of the movie, Amy Poehler voiced the mother of the Clock clan, Homily. It was a unique film for Poehler to be in, as it did not have much comedy in it, but she was convincing as a worried mother.
3 TV Show: Arrested Development - 8.7
Arrested Development focuses on the dysfunctional Bluth family after they have lost their fortune due to George Bluth, Sr. going to prison. During season one, one of the Bluths known as Gob married a woman on a dare, and that woman was portrayed by Amy Poehler.
In the several episodes in which she appeared, she received minimal screen time, yet she was always a fun addition to the show. Plus, the storyline of her marriage to Gob was a humorous one.
2 Movie: Inside Out - 8.2
Inside Out follows a young girl named Riley and the emotions inside of her as they try to deal with life in a new city. Amy Poehler starred in the film as Joy. She was the leader of the emotions and tried to make sure that Riley was always happy.
As the character was the feeling of joy brought to life, the role required a lot of energy and perkiness, and Poehler certainly brought that.
1 TV Show: The Simpsons - 8.7
This animated sitcom about the outrageous Simpsons family has had many great guest stars over the years, and Amy Poehler is one of them. She provided the voice for Jenda, who was Bart's girlfriend (and later ex-wife), during a couple of episodes that were set in the future.
Poehler was tasked with voicing a teenage version of the character in her first episode and then a significantly older version of the character in the second, and she did a good job with both.
