Cinema's latest girl gang, the Birds of Prey, made their big-screen debut in Cathy Yan's 2020 feature. In the movie, Margot Robbie's volatile Harley Quinn joins forces with Renee Montoya, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Black Canary to take out Black Mask, the narcissistic thug played by Ewan McGregor.
The Birds of Prey kick some serious butt as they stand now, but what other leading action movie ladies would make good additions to the team? This list presents 10 characters who take girl power to the next level.
10 Imperator Furiosa
Charlize Theron's character from 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road is a hardened oil runner who works for the dictator Immortan Joe. Furiosa decides to abandon her post and end Joe's reign of terror.
She reluctantly teams up with Tom Hardy's Mad Max, but she's very capable of defending herself against Joe's War Boys. She's skilled in weaponry, military tactics, and survival skills. Furiosa eventually kills Joe and frees his five female concubines.
9 Ellen Ripley
As Ellen Ripley, Sigourney Weaver sure gives Xenomorphs a run for their money in the Alien franchise. Instead of employing a stereotypical male lead, Ridley Scott chose Weaver as the original film's protagonist. Ripley is a fierce, intelligent, and adaptable hero.
Even when she sacrifices herself in Alien 3, the signature final girl still manages to return as a clone in Alien Resurrection. There's no getting rid of this lady.
8 The Bride
Uma Thurman gives a harrowing performance as the revenge-seeking character The Bride in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies. After being left for dead on her wedding day, Thurman's character engages in a slow, torturous recovery process, employing her previous martial arts training to take out every member of the assassination squad responsible for ruining her special day.
The Bride endures endless physical and mental pain in order to reach her final target: the group's leader, Bill, memorably played by David Carradine.
7 Gamora
In the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Gamora is an assassin trained by the intergalactic supervillain Thanos. While imprisoned, she joins the titular misfit group, which helps her find a healthier outlet for her impressive skill set.
Gamora possesses supernatural abilities, including quick healing, insane agility, and advanced fighting skills. Zoe Saldana gives her spunk and relatability in the films.
6 Katniss Everdeen
Survival is key for Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games protagonist played by Jennifer Lawrence. This District 12 tribute in the deadly title event is a master archer, hunter, and trapper. She is also adept at surviving off the land thanks to her plant knowledge.
Beyond this, Katniss' keen intellect and observational skills help her stay one step ahead of her opponents.
5 Friday Foster
Friday Foster is one of the earliest female action stars, played by Pam Grier in the 1975 film of the same name. Based on a comic book character, Friday is a model and photographer who becomes involved in uncovering a massive political plot to assassinate black politicians in America.
Friday is a sexy cutthroat protagonist who relies on the male tendency to objectify women in order to take out her enemies. She's one of the most important Blaxploitation icons.
4 Sarah Connor
Linda Hamilton plays the tough and resourceful Sarah Connor from the Terminator franchise, a woman who will do whatever it takes to protect her son John from Skynet and its android assassins.
Sarah starts off as a victim but transforms herself into a formidable fighter who stages major acts of explosive aggression against Skynet. Game of Thrones actor Emilia Clarke plays Connor in Terminator Genisys, but Hamilton returned for 2019's Terminator: Dark Fate.
3 Rey
Rey serves as one of the main characters in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Played by Daisy Ridley, Rey is a scavenger on Jakku fending for herself since childhood. She eventually joins the Resistance, battling against the First Order as a Jedi in training.
Rey is ambitious and hopeful about her movement's ability to take out the intergalactic autocrats, training under Luke Skywalker and General Leia. She eventually learns she's the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, adding a layer of tension to her narrative.
2 Black Widow
Black Widow is scheduled to hit theaters in November, but the character originated with the Iron Man franchise, going on to appear in multiple MCU features. Black Widow hones in on her past traumas in order to become a skilled fighter, proving her worth as a member of the Avengers.
However, in her world, 'Black Widow" is the name given to a specially trained female assassin. Scarlett Johansson plays Black Widow Natasha Romanoff, and Florence Pugh is set to play another Black Widow, Yelena Belova, in the upcoming film. Maybe Yelena could join the Birds of Prey, too.
1 Leeloo
Leeloo is the title component in Luc Besson's wacky space opera The Fifth Element. Milla Jovovich gives her character vulnerability without sacrificing Leeloo's ability to crush the evil forces trying to destroy Earth.
Leeloo is a perfect specimen, a flawless acrobatic fighter who scales walls and knocks out aliens with ease. She and Harley would get along swimmingly.
