Since the final season of Girls concluded on April 16, 2017, audiences from all around the world were left wondering how the group of 20-something-year-old millennials could have possibly been friends. Created by and starring Lena Dunham, Girls decided to go the opposite route compared to its New York City-set processors, such as the more glam Sex and the City and the quirky Friends. Instead of a series about positive growth and relationships, the HBO hit show focused on the toxicity of friendship, which was spotlighted by the all-female cast.
One of the show’s most toxic relationships was seen between the narcissistic and entitled Hannah Horvath and the naïve and airy Shoshanna Shapiro. So below are 10 reasons why Hannah and Shoshanna aren’t real friends.
10 Hannah Doesn’t Tell Shoshanna She’s Pregnant
Best friends and family are usually the first groups of people to find out when a close loved one is pregnant. When Hannah found out she was pregnant, she didn’t even think twice about telling her so-called friend.
In turn, Shoshanna was offended when she found out Hannah never told her. This is a very telling sign that the two girls were never close at all.
9 Shoshanna Doesn’t Invite Hannah To Her Engagement Party
To get back at Hannah for not telling her she’s going to be a mother soon, Shoshanna doesn’t tell Hannah that she’s engaged. In Girls’ penultimate episode, Shoshanna celebrates her engagement with a big party to which Hannah was not invited to. This is a pretty nasty move on Shoshanna’s part considering Hannah’s roommate Elijah (Andrew Rannells) managed to score an invitation to the festivities.
The party is subsequently interrupted by a bathroom meeting called by Marnie, where Shoshanna tells Hannah they “cannot hang out together anymore” and they should just call it quits.
8 Hannah Becomes Roommates With Ray
Ray is Shoshanna’s first-ever boyfriend and love interest. In fact Shosh even lost her virginity to him in the first season. So when Hannah allows Ray to move in with her, it’s a very poor choice on her part, considering the past Shosh and Ray shared together.
The situation was only made worse by the fact that Shoshanna didn’t know Ray moved in because Hannah never told her, and she only found out during a dinner party.
7 Hannah Hooks Up With Ray
By the fifth season, Shoshanna is pretty much over Ray. However, this doesn’t mean Hannah should be allowed to hook up with him. To pay Ray back for driving her home to New York, Hannah offers sexual favors in return.
Ray ends up crashing his coffee truck during the act. That’s karma for you. What hurts, even more, is that after his relationship with Shoshanna ended, Ray told Hannah they are now "nothing more than strangers."
6 Only Friends Because Of Jessa
These two are basically only friends, distant friends at best, because of their common acquaintance, Jessa. Jessa happens to be Shoshanna’s cousin and even lived with Jessa for some time.
On the other hand, Jessa knows Hannah from her days at Oberlin College, before she quit and moved abroad. It seems Hannah and Shoshanna only stayed friends because it was convenient.
5 Shoshanna Wants Better Friends
Shoshanna has always been the odd one out of the group of girls. When she finally matures through the seasons, as well as finally lets go of her college-self, Shoshanna realizes she wants better friends with “jobs and purses and nice personalities.”
Hannah doesn’t quite fit this mold considering she can’t be bothered with many people besides herself. In the first season alone, Shosh tells Hannah about her baggage and that she’s a virgin. Hannah doesn’t share any real reaction to this.
4 Hannah Is Condescending To Shoshanna
At the very beginning of the series, the young Shoshanna looked up to Hannah. But as time went by, Shoshanna started distancing herself from Hannah, mostly because Hannah would ignore her or be condescending towards her. And generally, because Hannah is so self-obsessed, she couldn’t be bothered with Shoshanna.
When Adam confronts Hannah about her friendship with the girls, she replies, “I’m not interested in anything they have to say!” This leads Shoshanna to turn on Hannah and ultimately the rest of the girls.
3 Shoshanna Moves To Japan For A Job
Always on a constant path to bettering herself, Shoshanna managed to gain more self-confidence and realized her friendship with Hannah was nothing more than toxic. To get away from this toxicity, Shoshanna decides to move to Japan for a career opportunity.
Before she leaves New York, Shosh tells Hannah and the rest of the girls that she wants out of the foursome, if she was ever part of it, to begin with.
2 Too Many Differences Between Them
Hannah and Shoshanna are so different it’s hard to believe they could ever be real friends. These two are on entirely different life paths, seeing as Hannah pursues grad school whilst Shosh is still graduating from college.
Additionally, with Hannah being so involved with pursuing her own goals, Shoshanna’s naivety becomes a burden to her. Over the seasons, Hannah and Shoshanna have become different people and ultimately, they become less invested in each other's lives.
1 Shoshanna Changes Her Phone Number
In today’s times, ghosting is a real thing. Shoshanna’s final move in letting Hannah know they are no longer friends, if they were ever friends, is in changing her phone number and not telling her.
Hannah only found out when she tried to reach Shoshanna to ask for advice about leaving New York to move upstate for a teaching job. This was the straw that broke the camel's back, as the saying goes.
