WWE Wrestlemania 36: Matches, Card, and Results

We’re halfway through WrestleMania 36, WWE’s Granddaddy of Them All. Due to the real world issues, the show is without a doubt one of the strangest WWE shows of all time. To make up for the underwhelming nature of doing the biggest wrestling show of the year with zero audience, the show has been split into two nights. As expected, the whole thing has been rather dadaist so far and we have another show to go through on Sunday night.

Here’s a look at what’s happened and what’s yet to come!

WHEN AND WHERE IS WWE WRESTLEMANIA 36?

The show takes place on April 4 and 5, 2020 at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. It was originally going to be at Tampa Bay for one night, but then COVID-19 happened and things got crazy. The show won’t even be live, apparently! Lots of pre-taped stuff going on.

WWE WRESTLEMANIA 36 RESULTS

WWE WrestleMania 36: Drew Gulak vs. Cesaro

DREW GULAK VS. CESARO

Results: Cesaro (FINALLY) broke out his old move from the indies, the UFO, where he spun Gulak’s body around Cesaro’s neck and shoulders before slamming him. Cesaro got the pin.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Kairi Sane and Asuka vs. Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross for the Women's Tag Team Championship

KAIRI SANE AND ASUKA (C) VS. ALEXA BLISS AND NIKKI CROSS

WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship

Results: With Asuka knocked out of the ring, Nikki took down Kairi with a neckbreaker, allowing Alexa to finish her off with Twisted Bliss from the top rope. We have new tag champs!

WWE WrestleMania 36: Elias vs. King Corbin

ELIAS VS. KING CORBIN

Results: With both wrestlers unable to put the other away for good, Corbin got desperate and tried for a pin with both feet on the ropes. The ref noticed this and got in an argument with Corbin, allowing Elias to roll up Corbin for a flash pin.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Becky Lynch vs. Shayna Baszler for the WWE Raw Women's Championship

BECKY LYNCH (C) VS. SHAYNA BASZLER

WWE Raw Women’s Championship

Results: After brawling on the outside, Baszler could have won by count-out, but threw Becky back into the ring, knowing that a count-out wouldn’t net her the title. She put Becky in the Kirifuda Clutch, but Becky was able to flip back over Baszler and turn it into a pin to retain.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Sami Zayn vs. Daniel Bryan for the Intercontinental Championship

SAMI ZAYN (C) VS. DANIEL BRYAN

Intercontinental Championship

Results: Bryan had Drew Gulak in his corner. As Bryan seemed to have things wrapped up, Sami’s buddies Nakamura and Cesaro ran out to attack Gulak. Bryan took out the two with a dive, returned to the ring, and ate a variation of the Helluva Kick. Sami retained.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Jimmy Uso vs. John Morrison vs. Kofi Kingston in a Ladder Match for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship

JIMMY USO VS. JOHN MORRISON (C) VS. KOFI KINGSTON

Ladder Match for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship

Results: Due to Miz being sick, the match was decided by a representative of each team. The match ended with the three fighting on top of the ladders and grabbing at the title belts. Jimmy and Kofi knocked Morrison to the mat, but Morrison had the belts in hand and brought them with him. Despite taking the final big bump, Morrison retained for his team.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins in a No Disqualification Match

KEVIN OWENS VS. SETH ROLLINS

Results: Rollins initially lost by disqualification for using a ring bell as a weapon. Owens refused to let it end that way and convinced Rollins to make it a No Disqualification match. Towards the end, Owens jumped off the WrestleMania sign and did a senton onto Rollins, who was draped over a table. He dragged Rollins to the ring, hit a stunner, and pinned him.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Goldberg vs. Braun Strowman for the WWE Universal Championship

GOLDBERG (C) VS. BRAUN STROWMAN

WWE Universal Championship

Results: While this was supposed to be Goldberg vs. Roman Reigns initially, Roman backed out due to his status as a leukemia survivor amid the possibility of being infected. Goldberg hit Braun with three spears, but couldn’t put him away. He went for the Jackhammer, only for Braun to reverse it into a powerslam. Braun hit a total of four consecutive powerslams in order to pin Goldberg and win his first world championship.

*************

In a segment involving 24/7 Champion R-Truth trying to find a hiding place, host Rob Gronkowski and buddy Mojo Rawley beat him down. Mojo betrayed Gronk and pinned Truth before Gronk had the chance. Mojo Rawley is now 24/7 Champion.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Undertaker vs. AJ Styles in a Boneyard Match

UNDERTAKER VS. AJ STYLES

Boneyard Match

Results: In a very cinematic, over-the-top fight, Undertaker eventually got the better of AJ by chokeslamming him off a roof. As he loomed over AJ, AJ pleaded for his life and begged not to be buried. Undertaker showed him respect, but ultimately decided to kick him into a grave and drop a bunch of dirt onto him. Undertaker revealed a tombstone (literal, not move) for AJ Styles and then rode off. AJ’s hand was shown peaking out of the dirt.

And that’s it for Night One!

WWE WRESTLEMANIA 36 MATCHES

WWE WrestleMania 36: Brock Lesnar vs. Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship

BROCK LESNAR (C) VS. DREW MCINTYRE

WWE Championship

Royal Rumble 2020 made it very apparent that we have Drew McIntyre vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship to look forward to. Despite being champion, a bored Brock entered himself into the Rumble at #1 and dominated more than any man or woman before him. Albeit thanks to a cheapshot assist from Ricochet, Drew McIntyre eliminated Brock and went on to win the whole match. Especially with the way McIntyre kept his eyes on Brock until he finally left the arena, it was obvious that we would be getting a WrestleMania title match out of this.

On the next edition of Raw, McIntyre indeed challenged Brock. Outside of getting ambushed by Brock at one point, McIntyre has been building towards this battle by steamrolling through the Raw roster. This includes killing Erick Rowan’s ridiculous pet spider. He also got the better of Brock and hit him with a couple Claymore kicks before posing with the title belt.

Brock did at least get revenge on Ricochet with a squash match at Super Show-Down. Now he wants to fulfill his Rumble vengeance by finishing off McIntyre.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Lacey Evans vs. Sasha Banks vs. Bayley (c) vs. Tamina Snuka vs. Naomi for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship

LACEY EVANS VS. SASHA BANKS VS. BAYLEY (C) VS. TAMINA SNUKA VS. NAOMI

Fatal 5-Way for the WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship

Bayley has held onto her WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship since October and her success in retaining it has gone to her head. She and her best friend Sasha Banks boasted about their dominance in the women’s division and how they essentially made modern women’s wrestling in WWE a big deal to begin with.

This brought out the retired Paige, who also deserved credit for the Women’s Revolution. Although she is in no shape to step into the ring again, Paige was allowed the authority to sign a match between Bayley, Sasha, Lacey Evans, Tamina, and Naomi.

WWE WrestleMania: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Charlotte Flair for the NXT Women's Championship

RHEA RIPLEY (C) VS. CHARLOTTE FLAIR

NXT Women’s Championship

Charlotte Flair won the Royal Rumble for the first time, but her options afterwards didn’t seem so exciting. Would she challenge Becky Lynch or Bayley? She’s battled both of them to death. NXT’s Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley wanted to make the decision for her by suggesting she prove herself against someone she hasn’t had much success against.

Charlotte eventually got back to Ripley by attacking her post-match after a successful title defense at NXT TakeOver. Charlotte agreed to challenge Ripley, being the first person to use their Rumble win for an NXT championship match.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Street Profits vs. Austin Theory and Angel Garza for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship

THE STREET PROFITS (C) VS. AUSTIN THEORY AND ANGEL GARZA

WWE Raw Tag Team Championship

Recently, Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford defeated Seth Rollins and Buddy Murphy for the tag titles. Now they’re defending them against…those guys. Yeah, there’s no real storyline for this one. Should be fun, at least!

WWE WrestleMania 36: Edge vs. Randy Orton

EDGE VS. RANDY ORTON

Last Man Standing

Edge made his surprise return at the Royal Rumble after years of being on the shelf due to injury-induced retirement. During that match, he briefly reunited with his old Rated RKO partner Randy Orton. The two backstabbed each other with Edge winning out.

On the following Raw, Orton acted friendly towards Edge, but laid him out with an RKO and brained him with a Conchairto. He spent weeks, silently refusing to explain his actions in response to the crowd’s endless booing. Finally, he told Edge’s wife Beth Phoenix that he merely did what he did to keep Edge from returning to wrestling. He wanted Edge to be a family man and live the good life. Blaming Phoenix for his actions, Orton knocked her out with an RKO.

A furious Edge returned to Raw and was interviewed by MVP. Orton tried to use this situation as a way to ambush Edge, but it failed. Orton was chased off and a furious Edge smashed MVP’s skull with his own Conchairto.

WWE WrestleMania 36: John Cena vs. The Fiend

JOHN CENA VS. THE FIEND

Firefly Funhouse Match

John Cena appeared on SmackDown to announce that he had no intention of competing at WrestleMania. On his way to the back, The Fiend appeared and pointed to the WrestleMania logo. Cena then agreed, okay, sure.

Bray Wyatt claimed that he wanted redemption for his match against Cena from WrestleMania XXX. Cena won and it caused such a downfall to Wyatt that he eventually let The Fiend corrupt him from the inside.

Much like Undertaker vs. AJ Styles, this is expected to be a very bizarre, cinematic type of match.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Otis vs. Dolph Ziggler

OTIS VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER

For a while, Otis had a budding will-they/won’t-they romance going on with Mandy Rose, much to the chagrin of Mandy’s partner Sonya Deville. When the two were supposed to go on a Valentine’s Day date, Otis was saddened to see Mandy with Dolph Ziggler instead. Things went south between Otis and Mandy after that, plus Otis and his partner Tucker were constantly crossing paths with Ziggler and his partner Bobby Roode.

Ziggler, repeatedly bullying Otis and rubbing the situation in his face, challenged him to a match at WrestleMania. Shortly after, some mysterious hacker revealed that Otis and Mandy’s date was actually sabotaged in a conspiracy between Ziggler and Deville.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Aleister Black vs. Bobby Lashley

ALEISTER BLACK VS. BOBBY LASHLEY

There’s no actual storyline behind this match. If anything, it appears to exist because the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal is off the table due to health concerns. Black and Lashley would have been likely contenders to win said battle royal, so might as well have them fight it out instead.
