Friends Vs How I Met Your Mother: 5 Ways Ted & Marshall Are The Better Best Friends (& 5 Ways It Is Chandler & Joey)

When Friends went off the air, a gap was left in comedy television that was seemingly filled a year later by How I Met Your Mother. Other great sitcoms like Scrubs were ongoing, but How I Met Your Mother had an eerily similar feeling to Friends while standing on its own as a fantastic show - until the finale that is.

Both shows center around groups of best friends, but each group has their uber-close male friends in Joey and Chandler, and Marshall and Ted. There is a lot to love about each friendship, but which is better? Who is the better pair of best friends? We look at both sides of that argument here.

10 Ted & Marshall Have Traditions

While Joey and Chandler have stuff they consistently do like watch Baywatch, they do not really have traditions. Marshall and Ted do, though.

There is, of course, the Robots vs. Wrestlers tradition, and alongside that, there is trilogy time, where Ted and Marshall, and later Barney, sit and watch the original Star Wars trilogy with each other every three years.

9 Chandler & Joey Enjoyed Living Together More

This is not to say Ted and Marshall did not enjoy living together, but they did so much less than Joey and Chandler.

Joey and Chandler always had fun with each other, always enjoyed each other's company, and save for big fallouts the two got on as roommates. On top of that, they are much, much more broken up than Ted and Marshall when one moves out.

8 Ted & Marshall Never Hooked Up With Each Others Romantic Interests

Lily is more or less Marshall's only romantic interest, and so he never gets with any of Ted's girlfriends, and Ted never tries to get with Lily, nor is there any romantic tension between them ever.

This is not the case with Chandler and Joey. Joey frequently made sexual jokes and comments about Monica. Worse than that, though, Chandler and Kathy kiss when Kathy and Joey are together, and Chandler gets with Joey's sister.

7 Chandler & Joey Weren't Always Out At A Bar Drinking

Outside of work, we pretty much see Marshall and Ted spend most of their time at MaClarens bar. Joey and Chander, though, while they do share beers in the house a lot, do not spend time at bars.

The pair do not drink out often, and there are very few occasions where we see them drunk. They do not need to be in a bar to have fun with each other and make it clear they much rather the coffee house.

6 Ted & Marshall Have Been Friends Since College

Chandler and Joey met each other a couple of years after Chandler graduated, whereas Marshall and Ted met each other, and were roommates since college.

This means the two pretty much matured into adults with each other, grew together, figured out their dreams and goals together, all as roommates, until an eventual split.

5 Chandler & Joey Hang Out Without Women

Marshall and Lily pretty much come as a package deal ever since they met in college. Since that day, it has been Marshall, Lily, and Ted as a three-way friendship. Ted and Marshall barely hang out alone.

Chandler and Joey hang out alone constantly for years until Chandler gets with Monica, and even then, they hang out more alone than Ted and Marshall ever do.

4 Ted & Marshall Were OK With Lily There

But, on the flip side, Marshall and Ted -- more so Ted considering Marshall is a given - do not really mind being a trio rather than a duo.

Joey has some emotions to work through in terms of being separated from Chandler, and would much rather have him to himself rather than share with Monica. But it is rarely an issue that MArshal and Ted do not hang out that much alone, save for one or two times it gets brought up by Ted.

3 Chandler & Joey Share And Support Each Others Jobs & Hobbies

Marshall is constantly making fun of Ted and his hobbies and likes, with Ted looking down on everyone for theirs. Ted also gets in the way of Marshall's law career a lot.

Chandler and Joey, on the other hand, while they have their bad moments, are more often than not supportive of each other's careers, especially Chandler towards Joey. On top of that their hobbies are shared, like watching sports, playing sports, TV, video games, etc.

2 Ted & Marshall Never Really Fall Out

Sure, Ted and Marshall argue, and they do have their small fallouts, they do not have fallouts as much or as big as Chandler and Joey.

The pair fell out when Joey wanted to live alone and was too stubborn to admit they did not like it. They fell out big when Chandler kissed Kathy, with a smaller one when Chandler kissed Joey's sister. On top of that, there were stubborn arguments like how Joey acted when Chandler and Monica wanted to move.

1 Chandler & Joey Had More Love & Emotion

Ultimately, there is just more love in Joey and Chandler's relationship than in Ted and Marshalls, not to say Ted and Marshall do not love each other.

Joey and Chandler just show more love and care for each other, whether it be by physical hugging or by Chandler's support for Joey's career. The two just come across as far more loving, with each other on mind far more often than Ted and Marshall.
