Bachelorette: What Happened to Chad Johnson From JoJo's Season?

With JoJo Fletcher's season of The Bachelorette airing Monday, it raises the question of what happened to one of the most notorious villains in franchise history, Chad Johnson? His aggression and instability was too much for JoJo, and he didn't stop getting himself into trouble once season 12 ended.

Chad was looking for more than love on JoJo's season. He wanted to play up a certain caricature, one of a bad boy who cares more about his physique than of the feelings of those around him. JoJo kept Chad around long enough for him to spar with the other contestants. He shoved Evan Bass during a group date and traded verbal jabs with Alex Woytkiw throughout the season, eventually falling to Alex in a two-on-one date. Seething, Chad stormed back to the house to deliver his final words to the rest of the men. He should have gone away after that. But The Bachelor franchise knew his entertainment value was too rich too ignore.

They paid the price. On the first episode of the following season of Bachelor In Paradise, Chad was removed from competition due to his aggressive behavior, leaving with a memorable "F*** you, Chris Harrison." Chad joined the cast of Ex on the Beach, where his recklessness was matched by some of the other troublesome personalities in the house. He kept coming back to our televisions because of his willingness to embrace the evil character he had created for himself.

But he wasn't just a bad boy for television. He turned out to be a pretty terrible guy in real life. Earlier this year, he was arrested for robbery with domestic violence enhancement. Though he has since been released from jail, the danger he can cause to not only himself but to those around him was never just for show.

The year 2016 marked the height of The Bachelor's experimentation with the villain archetype. The editors overloaded the audience with mean comments from Olivia Caridi on Ben Higgins' season and then followed it up with Chad. These types of characters simply don't enthrall an audience as well as they should because their entire edit is based upon a one-dimensional narrative. Chad should have never been cast on The Bachelorette. After his run-in with the law, it's unlikely we'll see him on any show again. If producers of The Bachelorette cared about the well-being of its cast, Chad wouldn't have even been considered in the first place.
