A piece of fan art by BossLogic imagines what a Captain Planet movie poster done in the style of modern superhero movies would look like. Captain Planet and the Planeteers was a popular animated Hanna-Barbera children's TV show that was broadcast in the 1990s. The show's plot focused on five different magic rings that are sent to five children, each from a different region on Earth. Each of the rings has a different power - earth, wind, fire, water and heart - and when they combine they summon Captain Planet, a superhero who fights for the environment and justice.
Each episode covered a different environmental or socio-political cause and attempted to educate children about the issue, while also providing tips on how to take action. While the show is incredibly dated (one of the children is originally from the Soviet Union), its message still resonates with the generation who grew up watching it, and many believe it is ripe for a more modern reboot. Multiple attempts at turning Captain Planet into a a film have failed, including one that Leonardo DiCaprio was attached to.
Despite this, digital artist BossLogic has posted his vision of what a Captain Planet movie poster could look like via Twitter. The poster, which he first made back in 2018, before reposting today, focuses on Captain Planet's hand wearing the five rings, and features a studio logo as well as an updated version of the Captain Planet logo. You can see the poster below.
The artwork is reminiscent of early Avengers: Infinity War artwork that showed Thanos wearing the Infinity Gauntlet and is clearly inspired by the Marvel movie. Subtle details add a nice touch to the poster, including the fire ring actually erupting with flame, as well as Captain Planet wearing an earth pendant on his hand. While a movie hasn't managed to get off the ground, this fan-made poster presents a vision for how the admittedly goofy and dated show could be adapted for a modern audience. Captain Planet clearly still resonates with fans, if the memes using him are anything to go by, and a parody of the character, featuring Don Cheadle, remains one of Funny or Die's most popular videos.
Additionally, the environmental and social justice causes Captain Planet fought for in the 1990s are arguably more relevant now than they were 30 years ago. One could easily imagine Captain Planet leading a Black Lives Matter protest, or fighting the effects of climate change in a modern movie. That might be wishful thinking, given that all attempts to make a Captain Planet movie have failed, but this fan poster certainly proves there could be a cool way to adapt the character for modern audiences.
