Disneyland plans to reopen July 17, pending government approval, after months of being shut down due to coronavirus concerns. In March, the World Health Organization labeled the coronavirus a pandemic, leading civilizations around the world to take extraordinary security precautions against the aggressive virus. In an attempt to prevent further COVID-19 outbreaks, the Mouse House shuttered all Disney theme parks indefinitely.
As of late, U.S. states are gradually lifting lockdown orders, leaving theme parks to workshop how to open amid the pandemic. Experiencing a financial shock due to the closure of the parks, the Walt Disney Company configured plans to stay in business, including putting employees on furlough, padding up the Disney+ catalog, and raising $11 billion in debt. In May, sections of Shanghai Disney resort reopened, while implementing new safety policies. These included limited capacity, mandatory mask-wearing, and a temperature screening at checkpoints. Recently, Disneyland Resort showed a possibility of reopening was on the horizon by opening reservations for July 1, 2020. Now, the Happiest Place on Earth has set a reopening date.
The Walt Disney Company reveals Disneyland has set a reopening date of July 17, 2020. Coinciding with the 65th anniversary of Disneyland opening for the first time, July 17 is the date the flagship theme park will welcome back guests, pending state and local government approvals. Following the longest closure in Disneyland’s history, reopening the park will entail implementing guidelines that will allow guests to safely enjoy their visit. Assuring the public that Disneyland Resort’s top priority is the safety and health of employees and guests, Disneyland reveals that guidelines to reopen will include limited capacity and enhanced safety measures. Disneyland issued this statement to clarify the use of a reservation system:
Because theme park capacity will be significantly limited to comply with governmental requirements and promote physical distancing, the Disneyland Resort will manage attendance through a new theme park reservation system that will require all guests, including Annual Passholders, to obtain a reservation for park entry in advance. Theme park reservations will be subject to availability. More details about this new reservation system will be available soon.
Disneyland reveals that upon reopening, parades, nighttime spectaculars, and character meet-and-greets will be temporarily unavailable, as these events tend to garner crowds. In addition to Disneyland, the Walt Disney Company plans to reopen the Disney California Adventure Park on July 17 and Downtown Disney District on July 9. Patrons anxious to stay in one of Disneyland’s famous hotels, such as Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, may likely do so starting July 23, 2020. As it stands, Disneyland Resort is currently receiving guidance from health and government authorities to ensure the July 17 reopening date sticks.
While it remains to be seen what lasting impacts the coronavirus pandemic has created, there's no doubt Disneyland reopening next month will help Disney bounce back. It's also a relief to hear the company is taking health and safety so seriously, the same way it did in its overseas parks. Following guidelines from health officials will create some differences in Disneyland but will allow guests to safely enjoy their visit to the Happiest Place on Earth.
