Reshoots for Marvel Studios' Phase 4 movie Eternals could begin soon based on a tease by star Salma Hayek. Now that the Infinity Saga has come to a close, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is filled with several new properties and characters. Eternals, directed by Chloé Zhao, follows an offshoot of humans modified by Celestials to give them incredible powers, earning them their name.
The new possible franchise is arguably the most obscure comic property the MCU has ever attempted to adapt, but interest in the film has been high after Marvel assembled a giant diverse cast. Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, and Gemma Chan are just a few of the main cast members, but it is Salma Hayek who will play the leader of the Eternals, named Ajak. Although Eternals was lucky enough to complete production prior to the shutdowns caused by the Coronavirus, Marvel's standard reshoots have yet to happen - but that might change soon.
In a recent Instagram post by Hayek, the Eternals star noted that she'd dyed the roots of her hair to prepare for reshoots. Hayek stopped short of revealing what project she'd soon be doing reshoots for, but Eternals is the most likely answer. The only other film on Hayek's slate is The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, which was recently delayed until 2021 and might not require reshoots at all. But, Marvel Studios typically performs reshoots on their films a few months before the release, so Eternals' reshoots might've already been scheduled to happen later this summer when the film was slated to hit theaters in November.
The return of production for Eternals will be a welcomed piece of good news for MCU fans looking forward to the film. It was previously announced that the film was pushed back as part of Marvel's Phase 4 reshuffling. Now instead of debuting in late 2020, Eternals won't hit theaters until February 2021. With more time to complete the project, the decision to do reshoots in the next month or so (which is just speculation since Hayek didn't specify when her reshoots begin) might confuse some. But, it is possible that Marvel is keeping Eternals reshoots in the same place as if the film was coming out in November. Since the film's large ensemble would already have their schedules clear, doing the reshoots soon could be easier than rescheduling them for later on.
If Hayek's upcoming reshoots are for Eternals and they begin soon, then this will be another sign of MCU productions picking back up after the Coronavirus. It was recently revealed that WandaVision would resume filming in July, and there have been rumblings that The Falcon and The Winter Soldier could finish its remaining production schedule soon too. These movements have begun after Hollywood's guidelines for filming until a Coronavirus vaccine is found were revealed. Now, fans will just have to wait and see when the cameras start rolling on Eternals again or if further confirmation arrives from other cast members.
