Playing Jess Mariano made Milo Ventimiglia a star, and his Gilmore Girls character is known for being intelligent, sarcastic, and much different from Rory Gilmore's other love interests. While some fans think that these two should have lived happily ever after, others think that he was too miserable and negative for the beloved bookworm. But one thing is for sure: Rory had a real bond with Jess, thanks to their love of reading and how smart they both are.
Since the show aired in the 2000s, there are a lot of aspects of this character that deserve a closer look today. Keep reading to find out some things Jess did on Gilmore Girls that wouldn't seem so normal in 2020.
10 Doesn't Even Have A Proper Room When He Lives With Luke
It seems pretty wild to think that Jess moves in with his uncle Luke (Scott Patterson) and there isn't even a real room for him. Luke lives in the apartment above his beloved charming diner, but it's not a two-bedroom — it's just one big open space.
That isn't exactly the best environment for a teenage boy, let alone one who is having a tough time and who needs love and attention more than anything else. It's no wonder that Jess hates living there.
9 Gives Everyone Attitude
It seems like no matter what scene Jess is in, he gives everyone around him attitude. He even acts that way toward Rory, at least at first before they start seeing each other.
Jess has zero respect for anyone older than him (or anyone his own age) and it really shows. This wouldn't fly today. So many Gilmore Girls fans love Jess and think that he's perfect for Rory, but if this TV show aired today, it seems like more viewers would admit that he isn't very nice.
8 Skips School All The Time
If Jess was a TV character in 2020, the fact his truancy would be discovered much sooner — and it would be a much bigger plot point than it is.
Jess treats school like it's completely optional and no one can get him in line, which seems weird. Is there really no authority figure that can force him to attend school?
7 Works As Many Hours As A Full-Time Employee
It turns out that Jess has been working at Walmart so much that he's basically a full-time employee. This is something that would never fly today.
Rory doesn't learn this until she's already graduating and has decided to go to Yale, but if this was today, it seems like she would find out about this much sooner. Jess wouldn't have been able to hide his double life so easily and people would notice that he was messing up so much. He gets away with way almost everything. Wouldn't the store manager notice how young he was? It doesn't make any sense.
6 He And Rory Kiss When She's In A Relationship
Many Gilmore Girls fans love Jess, and ship him and Rory, so it's easy to forget how their romance actually starts: they kiss when she's in a relationship with Dean.
Today, this would be a much bigger deal and people would have more of a problem with it, as Jess should have said that she had to work out the problems in her relationship before getting involved.
5 His Mom Literally Sends Him Away To Live With Someone Else
Luke's sister Liz (Kathleen Wilhoite) is pretty much a mess, but it's really bad that she sends her son away to live with someone else. She should want to take care of him and help him get through high school, especially since he's been having a hard time.
It also seems strange that Liz would pick her brother Luke to take care of Jess. Luke is grumpy and has no experience with parenting or with teenagers at all. This totally wouldn't fly today.
4 Moves To California And Doesn't Let Anyone Know
Today, would it be okay for Jess to move to California and not let Luke and Rory know? Definitely not.
Leaving town without letting people know what's happening is pretty dangerous, and Jess is still young at the time that he does this, so it doesn't seem like the best idea. This also wouldn't fly today because people use social media, and everyone in his life would be obsessively checking his profiles, wondering what was going on.
3 Arrives Late To Dinner With A Black Eye
When Rory wants Jess to meet her grandparents, he goes to dinner with a black eye and he also isn't on time.
Rory isn't thrilled about this, so why would she stay with him after he behaves so badly? It seems like everyone gives Jess the benefit of the doubt and gives him way too many chances. Today, people would see that he doesn't have any respect for anyone and they would be harder on him.
2 Pressures Rory
In the third season of Gilmore Girls, Rory and Jess are making out and he starts pressuring her to sleep with him. She tells him to stop and to wait but he's pretty aggressive. Things don't go any further, but it's still a strange moment for the couple, who otherwise seem to be perfect together.
This would never fly today and it's really bad behavior. It's hard to imagine why Rory would continue dating him after this point because she would definitely feel uncomfortable after that.
1 Doesn't Actually Finish High School
Jess is so smart, and yet he doesn't actually finish high school. This would never fly today as a high school education is definitely a prerequisite for basically every single job that someone would apply for.
If Jess was on TV today, it seems like he would not only finish high school but go to college and grad school, too, as maybe someone would have shown him that he deserves more.
