Godzilla's greatest weapon - his atomic breath - will be the key to defeating King Kong in 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong. Godzilla and Kong's upcoming showdown will be the second time in cinematic history that the two pop culture icons have clashed on the big screen; the first time was in Toho's 1962 crossover movie, King Kong vs. Godzilla.
For years, the MonsterVerse has been building up to its own version of the fight, and after two delays, Godzilla vs. Kong will finally hit theaters in May 2021. Directed by Adam Wingard, the fourth MonsterVerse installment will bring back a portion of Godzilla: King of the Monsters' cast and pit the two Titans against each other in a battle that's likely to take place at least partially on Kong's home, Skull Island. Classic Toho villain Mechagodzilla and original MonsterVerse Titan Nozuki are expected to be involved in the action as well. But how will the fight between the two titular Titans play out?
Kong will enter the battle as the underdog, despite getting a significant size upgrade. One big problem facing Kong is Godzilla's atomic breath, a fearsome weapon he has used on his enemies since the original 1954 movie, Gojira. The trouble this will give Kong was demonstrated in King Kong vs. Godzilla. When they first met, Godzilla blasted the forest in front of Kong, catching it on fire, which got onto Kong's fur and burned him considerably. Throughout their fights, Godzilla blasted him repeatedly, with King Kong struggling to find a way to properly combat this attack.
It's important to note that Godzilla's atomic breath is not fire. It's much hotter than that, and that makes it even more devastating. And Godzilla was clearly well-aware of the damage it was doing to his opponent. Regardless, King Kong was ultimately declared the winner of that fight by Toho, but only because of Kong's electrical powers - which he certainly won't have in Godzilla vs. Kong. Overcoming Godzilla's atomic breath will be a lot more difficult in the MonsterVerse. One of the reasons why his atomic breath is such a big issue for Kong is that unlike some of Godzilla's foes, he doesn't have a counterattack for it. King Ghidorah's gravity beams and Mechagodzilla's laser cannon and missiles prevent them from being at a severe disadvantage when there's a wide gap between them and Godzilla, but Kong doesn't have a ranged weapon that he can use for that purpose.
A possible solution for this would be to narrow the distance between them and take away any opportunity for Godzilla to use his atomic breath. However, plan is not without its flaws. First of all, Godzilla can still use this ability, even when Kong has his arms around him. Godzilla once hit Kong with his atomic breath to push him away. Kong may not have an advantage in close combat either, due to Godzilla's raw power. A toy leak teased that Kong may be carrying a giant axe in Godzilla vs. Kong. If that is indeed the case, Kong may have an effective weapon against Godzilla, but whether or not it will be enough to dethrone the King of the Monsters remains to be seen.
