See How The Craft Reboot Compares To Original In New Video

Fans of The Craft can now see just how much the new reboot differs from the original 1996 film. With its arrival set for late October, The Craft Legacy looks to offer a brand new take on a concept that has gained a substantial cult following over the years.

The original Andrew Fleming film follows Sarah Bailey, who moves with her father and stepmother from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Sarah catches the eye of three other outcast girls who end up befriending her. Together, the teens begin to dabble in witchcraft and form their coven. But as things escalate and the powers they meddle with become increasingly powerful, lives and friendships are drastically altered. The reboot began filming in October 2019, with Zoe Lister-Jones directing and Fleming returning to write the script. Blumhouse Films produced the movie, and the timing seems perfect for The Craft: Legacy, as it deals with issues related to power imbalances, diversity, social isolation, and friendship.

With the new trailer for the reboot now only a matter of days old, it’s safe to say interest in the film is consistently growing. Fans of the original will undoubtedly be curious to see how The Craft: Legacy compares, and so far, it looks as though there are quite a few similarities. Many of these similarities are now easy to spot, thanks to the work of YouTube channel Burns Reviews. The channel posted a side-by-side comparison of both movie's trailers:

Though the casts may be different and the times have changed, it does look as though The Craft: Legacy managed to maintain the spirit of the original. The first few moments of the comparison could be enough to convince some that Legacy is a shot for shot remake. This isn’t the case, however, and despite similarities between the original and the reboot, the latter appears to have put a new spin on the story, while still retaining some of the original’s essential elements. It is interesting to see how well the two films sit side by side, as this is often a tough task for many reboots to manage compared to the source material. Whether or not this is a good thing is hard to say, but for what’s it’s worth, it all looks pretty great right now.

Reboots are notoriously challenging to master. The key to success seems to lie in striking the perfect balance between old and new, in which case The Craft: Legacy already appears to have an advantage. Hopefully, for the sake of those who love the original, years of waiting has resulted in a timely update on the concept.
