Grant Gustin Would Play Another Superhero After The Flash

Grant Gustin, star of The CW’s The Flash, says he would love to continue acting in the superhero genre beyond the Arrowverse if given a chance. Gustin achieved widespread popularity for assuming the titular role in Arrow’s first spinoff series. With Arrow having recently concluded its eight-year run, The Flash is now the Arrowverse’s oldest active series.

With the move of DC Universe shows like Doom Patrol and Titans to HBO Max, many fans have wondered what the future of the Arrowverse will look like. Supergirl's announced cancellation followed Arrow’s end, and plans for new HBO Max DC shows, like Green Lantern, could mean a broader transition toward streaming. However, the Arrowverse still seems alive and well for the time being, with The Flash now the veteran standard-bearer for shows like Batwoman, Black Lightning, and the upcoming Superman & Lois, which begins filming next week.

In a new interview with Backstage, Gustin discussed his career, his time as Barry Allen, and what projects he’d like to work on going forward. In regards to doing other roles in the realm of science fiction and superhero stories, he said he’s “open to it” and that he’s “always been attracted to sci-fi and the genre world.” While he’d take the chance to play another superhero, Gustin seems to be keeping his options open, also saying that he’d love to return to the world of live stage performance for a while once theaters are allowed to reopen widely. You can read his full quote below.

“People assume I would never want to do something like [‘The Flash’] again, but, I'm open to that. I would play another superhero. If I was lucky enough to get to do that, or another genre-specific thing. I've always been attracted to sci-fi and the genre world. Maybe this role will help open those types of doors for me, and I'm definitely down for that.”

Given all the love Gustin has gotten from fans during his time on The Flash, it would certainly be a crowd-pleaser to see him don another iconic mask somewhere down the line. The Arrowverse has been hugely influential in the realm of televised sci-fi, and with Barry Allen near the center of that influence, it doesn’t seem unlikely that Gustin could continue finding success in the genre. Of course, The Flash isn’t over yet. Gustin’s still got some time left in the bright red tights.

While not many actors have doubled-up in major superhero roles, it’s certainly happened in the past. Ryan Reynolds famously starred in the panned Green Lantern movie, but later redeemed himself in Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Similarly, Chris Evans took a turn as the Human Torch in the early 2000s’ Fantastic Four films and later took a much larger role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Only time will tell what awaits Gustin and his fans in the future.
