The two-months-long cataclysmic event that is set to shake the very foundations of the DC universe to its very core will, in turn, cast its heroes into the throes of chaos, the likes of which they have never before experienced. Among those profoundly affected by the Future State event will be Billy Batson and, through him, the powers of Shazam. But it sounds as though the changes that will befall Earth’s Mightiest Mortal will be of Billy’s own choosing in Future State: SHAZAM!, by Tim Sheridan and Eduardo Pansica, for DC has revealed that the boy will make a deal with the devil.
Besides the obvious fact that this dangerous pact will most likely put Billy’s soul in jeopardy, it’s quite likely that it can and will affect the connection he has with the gods, for it has been tampered with and severed before. During the Justice League and Darkseid War, the death of Darkseid terminated the influx of power Billy received from the gods, thus forcing the Wizard Mamaragan to imbue Billy with the powers of six new deities (including himself). If the God of Tyranny’s death can achieve such a feat, no doubt the devil can do something similar without having to die.
Then there’s the question of how Mamaragan will perceive and react to this latest development. Remember, the Wizard initially refused to grant Billy the powers of Shazam for not being perfectly good, so it’s plausible that he may have no choice but to take them away. The reason being those who make a deal with the devil arguably lose any manifestation of goodness within themselves. Regardless, the likelihood that Billy’s connection with the gods will be affected in some way is quite high.
However, this isn’t to say that Billy will just randomly think it would be in his best interest to put everything he has on the line by making a deal, let alone speaking with a being who is the very antithesis of good and, therefore, the personification of what it means to not be worthy of Shazam. DC recently revealed that Billy will make a sacrifice to imprison an evil he fails to destroy. What could this evil possibly be? It would have to be someone who is more powerful than Zonuz, the God of Evil. And this is a being who actually wielded the Anti-Life Equation, a formula that the all-powerful Darkseid finally was able to obtain in Final Crisis.
So it can be assumed that the evil which Shazam is unable to defeat is somehow responsible for the failure known as the Final Battle of Titans Island. For Billy has been missing for years ever since the incident took place.
