Season 2 of the CW's Stargirl is looking to cast the villain Eclipso to replace the Injustice Society of America. The latest DC television show to win over audiences stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, a normal teen whose life is turned upside down when she discovers a cosmic staff that once belonged to the superhero Starman (Joel McHale). Armed with the staff and her stepfather Pat (Luke Wilson), who served as Starman's sidekick, Courtney and her friends form the newest generation of the Justice Society of America to take on its nefarious counterpart, the Injustice Society.
Stargirl season 1 featured a formidable Injustice Society, comprised of notable members such as Icicle (Neil Jackson) and Brainwave (Christopher James Baker). The Stargirl season finale saw the Justice Society go up against the villainous team, and they largely came away victorious. In fact, the fates of several Injustice Society members remain up in the air, leaving the antagonist role within Stargirl wide open for season 2. However, the finale made sure to tease the identity of who could end up taking over, and now fans have some more insight into the part he'll play in Stargirl.
During Sunday's Stargirl panel at this year's virtual New York Comic-Con, showrunner Geoff Johns dug into Eclipso's impending arrival. "I’m so excited for Eclipso," Johns enthused. "Eclipso is so terrifying." As Eclipso has the ability to posses anyone holding a specific diamond shard, he makes a good point. Johns continued by pointing out that Eclipso is "a very different antagonist or villain than the ISA." When it comes to his Stargirl season 2 role, Johns teased:
We’re just starting to cast him [Eclipso] so we’re looking for that and I’ve got these wonderful designs from LJ Shannon - what he’s gonna look like. But it’s a such a different, darker scarier threat because the threat is Cindy’s one thing and she’s got the black diamond and we’re gonna obviously explore that but the thing inside it. This entity that’s trapped, this ancient being that feeds off humanity’s own sins and grief and fear and darkness trapped in this black diamond and has been there for a long long time and is aching to do what he does and feed off the darkness within humanity. It’s gonna take a lot to confront it and it’s gonna take the JSA and every one of our wonderful characters to a place that’s gonna be tough for them to explore.
Stargirl's season 1 finale saw Cindy Burman (Meg DeLacy) uncovering a black diamond glowing with an ominous light. While Eclipso wasn't seen, his laughter could be heard, and Cindy greeted him by name. Therefore, fans have known for a while that Eclipso would emerge within Stargirl season 2. Johns' comments further cement the feeling that Eclipso will be the main villain going forward, and he'll likely have Cindy by his side helping him out. Considering season 1 had several different antagonists, perhaps Stargirl season 2 will choose to go a bit smaller and only focus on Eclipso and Cindy for a bit.
Exactly when season 2 will premiere remains to be seen, but during the NYCC panel, Johns revealed the scripts are still being written. Stargirl wasn't included among the CW's January 2021 schedule, which means fans will have to wait a bit longer for Courtney's return. The arrival of Eclipso is bound to only heighten fans' excitement, particularly because he's such an eccentric villain. It'll be interesting to see how he translates to the small screen when Stargirl season 2 arrives.
Stargirl season 2 will premiere in 2021.
