Amy Farrah Fowler was introduced in The Big Bang Theory as a gifted neurobiologist who got along with Sheldon because the two shared quite a few quirks and appreciated each other. But as the show progressed Amy transformed into every basic rom-com heroine ever, and fans have often talked about why Amy’s character design was so flawed.
Nevertheless, fans have often related to her character especially when she got real about her childhood struggles with social anxieties or bullying. That being said, Amy wasn’t always a great friend and has a history of not respecting the boundaries of her friends. Here are a few moments which made fans feel bad for her and a few times she drew ire.
10 Felt Sorry: When She Opened Up About Her Difficult Childhood
Amy has often talked about the relentless bullying and hazing she had to go through in high school and in college abroad; from cruel, scarring pranks to lonely lunches it was obvious that Amy did not have a lot of friends growing up and had been made fun of by the popular kids.
However, once she finds her stride things get better and of course, she makes new friends and has a pretty stable social life. But trauma can sometimes be deep-seated and Amy’s past experiences have given her a lot of trust issues.
9 Hated Her: When She Did Not Respect Sheldon’s Boundaries
A running gag in the show is Amy asking Sheldon to get physical with her and to participate in PDA, but this is a problematic depiction. It basically means Amy does not respect Sheldon’s boundaries and neither does she understand them; as explored in Young Sheldon as well, Sheldon has quite a few anxieties about human contact.
If a man pressuring a woman into sex makes for a toxic storyline, a man being pressured should also be depicted as equally disturbing but on the show most of these tensions are used as comedic tropes.
8 Felt Sorry: When Penny And Bernadette Went Shopping Without Her
As a kid Amy was never a part of the cool social group, and never had any friends to go shopping with; in fact, she had revealed once that her only friend in high school was the janitor. So when she meets Penny and Bernadette, she cherishes the friendship because they are her first real friends.
But when she finds out they went shopping behind her back and deliberately kept the information from her, she feels horrible as it brings back some of her old memories of being left out of fun, social gatherings.
7 Hated Her: When She Propagates Jealousy Just For The Drama
Amy is one of the smartest people on the show and fans have often been baffled by her obsession with petty drama, especially at the expense of someone else's feelings. Surely she must realize that sustaining relationships is hard and they take a lot of work.
But Amy spends most of the show being nosy about Penny and Leonard’s relationship, even acting as the mouthpiece for Penny’s inner anxieties by bringing up issues that she knows will trigger jealousy and low self-esteem in Penny. This is weird because Amy is Penny’s friend and instead of trying to make her feel bad, she can be her source of support.
6 Felt Sorry: When Sheldon Did Not Appreciate Her Accomplishments
Sheldon can be quite obsessed with himself and rarely takes time to cherish the milestones in his friends’ lives. It was also quite obvious that Sheldon did not have a lot of respect for neurobiology, which was Amy’s field of expertise.
During a date night, Amy tells Sheldon about her recent accomplishment which is a pretty big deal and takes her career a step ahead. But not only is Sheldon disinterested but he constantly brags about his newly acquired double-digit Twitter followers.
5 Hated Her: When She Is Nasty To Wil Wheaton
Fans were quite confused as to why Amy was so rude and unnecessarily nasty to Wil Wheaton when he agreed to be a part of Sheldon’s amateurish flag show. Amy had no reason to not like Will just because Sheldon was close to him. Amy was directing the YouTube show and gave Will some pretty hurtful feedback about his performance, even though he was helping out Sheldon for free.
She also made Sheldon choose between her and Will which was unnecessary and caused a rift between her and Sheldon because Sheldon obviously chose to spend time with Will.
4 Felt Sorry: When Sheldon Refused To Move In With Her
To be fair, it wasn’t Sheldon’s fault, especially since it takes him a while to get used to living around new people. Clearly, he does not want unfamiliar faces living with him, and even though Amy is his girlfriend and he enjoys being with her, Sheldon did not want to move in with her.
When Sheldon actively starts looking for a roommate, Amy suggests that she is ready to move in so he does not have to live for strangers. But Sheldon clearly did not reciprocate her feelings and that makes Amy really upset.
3 Hated Her: When She Played Penny And Bernadette Against Each Other
Fans have often struggled to understand why Amy enjoys cliquey politics and social tensions especially within her own circle of friends. She has often manipulated Penny and Bernadette and has made room for some bad vibes.
When Bernadette wants to get Penny a job and wants her to prepare well but notices Penny is taking it easy she gets upset. Bernadette calls Amy to rant about Penny while Penny too, calls Amy to complain about Bernadette. Instead of telling them that she isn’t comfortable with the gossiping, Amy really enjoys the attention she gets from the two and makes things even worse.
2 Felt Sorry: When She Was Made To Feel Bad About Her Looks
Amy has often talked about her inferiority complex especially vis-a-vis her appearance, and it didn’t help that her social circle had a lot of people who made jokes at her expense.
Amy obviously struggled with her looks, especially because she was friends with Penny and Bernadette who were conventionally good looking, and didn’t relate to Amy’s struggles. And Amy was often made to feel bad about her fashion and her looks, and one of the meanest digs was probably made by Raj during their battle for tenure.
1 Hated Her: When She Was A Blabbermouth
One of Amy’s worst traits is definitely her inability to keep sensitive secrets, and it caused a lot of tension within the group. Her biggest mistake was telling Sheldon that Penny was thinking about dumping Leonard. Not only was this insensitive and quite childish but Amy was also being a bad friend to Penny because the latter was clearly going through a tough time navigating her relationship with Leonard and was also wasn’t feeling great about some of her other choices.
Instead of helping her out or making her feel better, Amy made things substantially worse when she told Penny’s secret to the one person who would not understand how sensitive the information is.
